Can someone explain to me why United got more uefa coefficient points than Barca last year?

United didn't lose a game and won 1 more game than Barca.

I never realised how they calculated these. You get points for wins and draws, as well as for qualifying for the group stages and the last 16. Then there's a "country coefficient" which involves all the points won by clubs in a particular association divided by the number of clubs.

So the better we do as a club the more points we get but also the better all the English clubs do in Europe, the more we get as well.

As an example, if we qualify for the last 8 with 3 wins and 2 draws in the group stages then a win and a draw in the last 16 and a draw and loss in the last 8, we will get 20 points (if I've worked it out correctly).

If there are 6 English clubs and they get 120 points between them, we get another 20 points on top.

-- Wed Aug 17, 2011 10:38 pm --

See above. It could be the country coefficient.

Ah right cheers for that, just find it weird that the winners dont get the most.

I'm intrigued now and going to try to work it out.

Yeah this guys right, Barca lost two games in the groups whereas united only lost in the final.

UEFA don't give many points for the fa cup then!
If we can do well in the champs league for the next few years we'll be right up there.

Both Barca and the rags had exactly the same points as clubs, as both had 4 wins and 2 draws in the group stages and both got to the final. Results past the group stage don't matter as far as points are concerned, jsut whether you go through.

So they got 4 points for getting to the group stages in the first place and 10 for the wins and draws. They then get another point for getting to the next stage and an extra 4 points for participation in the last 16, making another 5 for getting that far plus another four each for getting through each further round and into the final. Bizarrely there are no points for actualy winning so both got 22 points as individual clubs.

Therefore the difference has to be the country coefficient, which means Spanish teams on aggregate did marginally worse than English ones over the previous 5 years.
