UK far right trouble

A - does it matter? He and I were both making a broader point.
B - did you read my post? I clearly wrote 'if that's true' next to it.
Well I'm just interested in whether the "when I read" in your post just reading Mazzarelli Swiss Cheese's post saying "I think we've arrested / imprisoned more of our people for social media posts than Russia in the last few years?" Or did you read something else about it somewhere? Because if it is entirely based on his post, then I'd say that says a lot about your readiness to believe something that is likely bollocks (yes, you put the caveat, but you also describe it a 'shameful' which is not the usual reaction of a sceptical person).

For the record, I did a quick Google and came up with this fact checking article on it. Just a few of the key points.

- it compares figures from a Russian NGO stating that 411 criminal proceedings were brought against people, so obviously doesn't include people who were arrested and held without charge, and at least seems to be focused on a particular kind of online 'offence'
- the UK figures are from an official freedom of information request showing that just under 3400 arrests were made about online communications, of which around 1700 were charged.
- the UK figures include things like online harassment, and include all forms of electronic media, not just social media, so could include, for example, people with a restraining order texting someone, or people DMing a footballer with racist abuse
- most importantly of all, both are based on figures from 2017, so to attempt to link it in any way to the current government cracking down on speech they disagree with is clearly disingenuous

All of that didn't stop it being spread as if it were true by high profile individuals at the time (2023) though.

I think you're struggling with the word 'if' mate. I was/am sceptical about the statement but I'm glad you're here to tell me what I actually believe rather than taking my word for it.

That said, I have to say there's more of an evidential basis for it to be true than I thought judging by that article you linked.

The Russian human rights organisation who published the doc aren't exactly cheerleaders for the Kremlin so I would take the stats they post fairly seriously.

It seems like Russia go after online forums/internet companies before 'harmful' things can be written whereas the UK allow online media to exist but heavily police the content that's written under a range of different laws and even under laws that don't exist (non-hate speech crimes)...truly Orwellian!

I think you mean the symptoms of certain grievances are dealt with more harshly, because the grievances themselves are either beyond solution, not recognised as "valid" grievances at all, or are considered hateful.

Case in point, if you believe in multicultural Britain, which everyone it seems is required to do, then there is no dominant British culture, there can't be, or a prevailing English culture for that matter, because there are no indigenous Brits, and as there's no indigenous Brits, there's no such thing as an indigenous culture (cherishing ones culture is the exclusive preserve of ethnic minorities). Britain is a multi-cultural, multi ethnic society where everything is whatever and there's no need for ethnic minorities to integrate, or as the left like to call them the "global majority", coz there's nowt to integrate with.

Anyone who disagrees is a racist. So those who believe there is an indigenous population and there is an indigenous culture and seek to embrace it, to promote it and defend it, are flummoxed, what to do? The left despises them and the right exploit them, hijacking their discontentment for their own ends.

Complete rubbish.

Excellent insight.

Firstly, you're not required to believe in anything.

Two questions. What do you define as British culture or Britishness? And do you think any of this Britishness is eroding?
