Underrated vs overrated

I can't agree with that. NDJ has shown for Holland that he is excellent at holding the midfield and feeding the attaching players. He wasn't the best in the world but he was far better than Garcia or Fernando. It was stupid to let him go. Easy to say that now though.

We offered him very generous terms to stay, he turned us down, probably because of the agenda ;)

Like it...... But you are right I think De Jong could see he was never going to play for Holland unless he left City as the Dutch media are very anti City

Barry was underrated by the general football sheep, but I don't think any City fan thought he was anything short of top class. He got scapegoated for England losing to Germany, despite being visibly unfit and being massively let down by teammates who were only out for themselves, and his reputation with the non-City public never recovered. It was a sign of just how important he was that he was forced to play despite being in no fit shape to do so. Englands only actual holding midfield player that I can think of, I'd probably still have him in my starting england team now, even though he's completely past it.

De Jong on the other hand I think was hugely overrated, however much I loved him. He was a flashy player, which is odd for a holding midfielder who doesn't do much. But because he threw himself into sliding tackles at every opportunity, he got your attention and it made him seem like he was doing a lot more than he actually was. We were probably a lot better when he wasn't in the team. I'd put him up there with the Bellamy's and Milners, players who are pretty average but you always like watching as they look like they are trying and they catch your eye with their energetic style of play

De Jong was useful but only if used in a midfield three, he was a limited player whose skillset was only geared towards destroying rather than creating. He was great in 10/11 when we had him Gaz Baz and Yaya, this is probably where he built up his cult following , plus blues wanted to rush to his defence after the 2010 world cup final and tackle on Ben Arfa later that year.

When Mancini changed it the following year he was sidelined to a substitute role , we looked much more fluent going forward as a result. He was a useful sub to come on later in games to free up Yaya from any defensive work, which probably won us the title ultimately

Gaz Baz was my favourite player during this period, he was massively underated by most outside city and a few within. It was his inteligence on the football field that marked him out as a class palyer, the way he could position his body between the ball and oposition to draw easy fouls and ease pressure, the way he used the fill in gaps when the full backs went forward. He was also very classy on the ball and had good distribution and often started off attacks with the first key pass of a move.

Gareth Barry's ability to fall down like an old woman and always get a freekick was always hugely underrated. It looked terrible, but it was a get out of jail free card every time. Kolarov has tried to take up that mantle, but his falls aren't nearly as comical or convincing

Barry was the absolute best at that job imo. You could question whether a top side should have such a player as a DeJong or Barry playing regularly, or be good enough as a team to share the job between them without needing a specialist, but if you are going to have a player in that job, Barry was special. It was almost as if he could see 10 seconds into the future & just jogged into a position where the ball ended up. Remarkable.

I think that's why he wasn't rated by some. DeJong would have to sprint & make a spectacular sliding/ dangerous tackle to win the ball. Barry would already be stood there before it atrived & just calmly control & pass it.

That's what happened when he got all the shit for his England performance. He was the only England player who saw the danger, but wasn't fit enough to rescue the team. The rest were fucking stranded.

I think de Michelis at times (especially in the World Cup) has a knack of just being in the right place it is the most underrated skill in the game. If you read it well you can do everything early and solve footballing problems before they happen.

Where can we find the next Gaz baz?

NDJ was really good at fully committed sliding tackles. Really really good. Numerous times he would end a break away move by just flying in with a perfectly timed crunching ball winner.
The rest of his game was fairly average but fans remember him for those tackles.
Barry didn’t do any one thing exceptionally well but he was a much better all round player.

I liked Barry until he got far too slow for the job and should have been replaced properly after the title win, I prefer Fern.

The nail in the coffin for Barry was when he kicked it in his own goal at Southampton, won't forgive him for it.

Barry was slightly underrated who became massively overrated in the space of a summer window.
