Still flourishing and dominating in the Manchester area?

Been on the website and it is obviously still functioning as a club and I just wonder if most the teams still dominate on a weekly basis. Hard to deduce certain things from some websites.

Who has played for, and/or has kids who have or do play for Unicorn Athletic?

In my opinion the best youth football club in all of Greater Manchester and probably one of the best in the north of England. Loved my few years as a lad with Unicorn and it was from Unicorn and through Derek Calderbank how City picked me up. Some of the happiest days of my life were playing for Unicorn Athletic and I still have my blue n white striped shirt on my wall. The end of season award nights/ceremonies took fooking forever because so many trophies were handed out to so many lads!!!

Does anyone know if Derek is still at City, in charge of the ballboys, even alive?

De La Salle are the only team I can remember that ever gave us a challenge and that was in the Umbro Cup, which we made to the final two years in a row I think (albeit sort of a dream team from the area with mainly Unicorn lads).
We had tough matches and didn't win every week but we used to tonk teams 13-0 and 10-1 sometimes. Some say it's not fun and/or productive when you just smash everyone you play, but I beg to differ. We were just that good a team and club. Flixton, Urmston and if my memory serves me right Sale were our hardest teams.

Unicorn Athletic F.C and City. Loved my early early teens and childhood.

My lad played against Unicorn last week(under 13's) don't know about this Derick but My lad got picked up by the rags and liverpool (let him go) just waiting for city now, he'll try a lot harder!

He's honourary life president of Timperley League but i've been on Unicorn's OS and there's no sight of him. In the paper a while back there was an obituary for a Derek Calderbank but the funeral was in Llandudno (where my grandad died actually) and not Manchester. Im guessing he would be in his 70's now. Last time I saw him was at C.O.M.S and that were Keegan managerial era a few years back now so it may have been him. Anyway im rambling.

Good luck to you and your kid...he manages/managed only the u-9s these days so chances are he wasn't anywhere near your lad and (if still a scout) pick him up.

I play for Ashton on Mersey, played Unicorn 2 weeks ago & won 2 nil. I scored a free kick ;-)

I `ve seen and spoken to Derek outside City`s ground this season as he`s still involved with organising the ball boys (think it was before the Everton game). He can still be seen approx just over an hour before kick off between spirals V and X. Or during the match warm up he is usually around the tunnel between the CB and the North Stand.

Is this made up from the staff and customers of the veggie / vegan supermarket in Chorlton?

You clearly have no experience in Manchester youth football so bog off mate.

-- Thu Oct 20, 2011 3:22 pm --

Brilliant well if you can next time you see him this or next season (or any) just say a quick hello from Adam (and his dad Peter) who bogged of to Florida in the 90's that would be brill. At least I know he's still doing what he loves. Nice one!

Urmston Meadowside, Parkwyddn , Urmston Town, Deans Sports, De La Salle , are all better than Unicorn these days i'm afraid!

I thought Urmston Town FC folded recently?
