UEFA Group of 14
PL Group of 2?
Let’s all be honest, football has moved waaaaay far away from being a weekend respite for the working class, where they can support their local team, buy a program before the game, buy a pie and a cup of OXO or a pint at half time, and visit the club shop for a shirt for the lad at Christmas to help the clubs finances, and is now simply a global TV franchise like BGT/AGT or Top Gear!
Yes, it has helped inject a higher quality player and level of football into the game, but it is rapidly proving out punters AND SOME CLUBS!
We can’t be too far from a European Suoer League, can we?
Relegation & Promotion from ESL to PL for lowest placed English team, anyone?
US mega franchisers don’t get involved for the sport, they get involved for the CASH FLOW! FSG (Liverpool) are all about the 162 game season and the 81 home games that fill Fenway Park for BoSox games, with EVERY game televised, corporate promotions bringing in millions in revenues, and before you know it, you have a $Billion club with $100Ms in cash flow...sports franchises are simply an ATM that spits out cash all day every day!
And, tbf, Sheikh Mansour has turned a once sleeping (fading) giant into the same thing, except he sells stakes in the franchise (US & China) and has recouped all his $$$ already, yet gets richer by the day from the parts he still owns. The big difference SO FAR, is that he still sees it as a vehicle that needs investment to maximize the mother’s milk it will throw off...but that gravy train is almost over, too, as the phrase “self-sustaining” becomes the watchword of the organization.
How long will it be before City (or CFG) is throwing off excess dollars FROM OPERATIONS, which font get ploughed back into the club???
So, it’s time! Is the Premier League going to retain its status AND be the gift that keeps on giving to the EFL? Is the “elite” of the Premier League about to extract “ownership of decisions” as the price to bail out the so-called football pyramid?
Or, are small communities going to come to the realization that full time professional football is very expensive, both on and off the field, and that the EFL needs to be considerably smaller to achieve and semblance of self-sustaining fiscal balance?
Does English football NEED 92 professional clubs, with entire sub-pyramid of scores of lower league teams struggling for ball sponsors, etc.?
It’s what we ALL grew up with, and it paid for my family’s existence for 20 years, but in a world where money talks, and absolutely nothing related to football is getting cheaper, what does the future look like in 5, 10, 20 years, and is NOW the time to organize ourselves for it?
Would an 18 team league be a bad thing for the players? After all, you can only get so much blood out of the stone! I watched the best midfielder in the world ASKING to come off the field after 70 minutes in an international match at Wembley, while captaining his country! That’s unheard of...but I’m glad he did it, because 11 games in a month MIGHT be a game or two too many!
Personally, I think we are heading to a 16 team PL, with a 30 game season, and a significantly expanded CL, which may well include multi-tiered GROUP STAGES (48/32 to 16 to an 8 club knockout competition).
For good or bad, we ALL KNOW WHERE THE MONEY IS, and the game will gravitate towards the $$$$. The one POTENTIAL BRIGHT SPOT might be an ability to lower ticket prices to levels where the working class “Everyman” can still go to games and feel a part of the club, while seeing big games...even if it is a two-tier system of domestic pricing and Euro-pricing.
