Does anyone with academy knowledge know if Butt is any good?

I don’t know but it is the easy appointment.

If I was DOF over there I would have set out to find a short list of excellent coaches with strong track records and great contacts around the game. I would have asked them all to explain the vision for the academy and how they would turn around the fortunes of the younger age group, who they would bring in, how they would go about scouting etc etc. I would look to bring in an outsider with a mandate to transform the place and kick it on.

If I was disinterested and looking for the easy option I’d have a quiet word with one of the old guard and ask them who wants it. He might be the man for the job however it smacks of complacency and lack of genuine desire to change.

I agree. But just to ply devil's advocate we don't know if that's exactly what United have done but then opted for Butt. I'm hoping it's complacency though, which seems to be endemic at the swamp these days.

Good point, just like the ticket tout to accept this for his silence/change of heart over Maureen. Another corrupt bent bastard
Stand named after Charlton, Butt appointed Academy head. Does sound like Woodward is trying to placate the old guard because he's about to do something they won't like.

But then that gang of moral bankrupts could always have their principles bought off them. Like Gill railing against the Glazers' forthcoming purchase back in 2004 and saying "Debt is the road to ruin" then staying on to take their shilling because "I had 550 employees who relied on me". I'm sure there'd have been no shortage of well-qualified applicants for the job and that he wouldn't have been short of offers.

It's the United way these days. Long may it continue.
