Hope you're right Harry, - though I remember a young German team getting royally slagged off in the early career of Mertesacker whom I thought might have been of French origin (name sounds like bag of ***** in French). Turns out that was their transitional rebuild phase and look at them now.

My opinion?

Several reasons.

Firstly, the local rivalry. Because of geography, their fans are the ones City supporters see more than any others.
Then there were many years of Mickey-taking, when we were poor. Or worse.
Now there is the hilarity at what they've become; a piss-poor shadow of their former selves.

Or he's done really well in the academy teams, and fully deserves his promotion, saving them over £30m in the process.
