I see that they have triggered the 1 year extention on De Gea's contract, While it eases the immediate pressure on them it must be concerning that they have had to do this instead of him signing a new contract. So it still looks like he will be off before too much longer.

Or is it a case that they are extending by a year to ensure they can get a fee for him at the end of the season?

It's this week's buzz story after his (really quite good) save.
It'll be a combination - more time to find a new keeper, more time to get out of the funk they're in right now, or a nice fat fee. PSG are about the only team who might want him, and also be able to afford him (can't see him swapping for Oblak at Atletico).

Poor bastard being made to do a Terry Waite at the swamp. Watch his Ferrari get covered in moss as the tyres deflate in the car park at the swamp whilst he is chained to the radiator in the GPC's old office.

They wouldn't have triggered the extension if contract talks were going well, that seems certain.

It does buy them time, but if you had to guess, it'd be that his time at United is rather limited.

Well it can only mean that he is kept there a year longer than he wanted OR he leaves on a bigger fee which could affect the wage he is then able to extract from an employer who wasn't planning on paying the fee. DeGea is going to be so motivated isn't he ? lol

Pretty much. If they were confident of him staying then they wouldn't have exercised the option - at least not yet.

So it could be about maximising a fee of course, and it's always possible that he will sign a new deal. But after this news, I wouldn't bet on it. Presumably also that extra year is on his current wage, and I can't imagine he's ecstatic about that.

Presumably he'd be able to talk to others in January if they didn't extend it by 31 Dec, so a month early.
