How about them not "maintaining a certain level" and dropping to mid-table for a couple of seasons?
That's mid-table at the end of the season not for a few games to give us a laugh, and then crawling up to top four as others part their arse cheeks to help them.
Then they can fail to maintain mid-table and struggle as they did in 1972-73.
And then they repeat their relegation of 73-74. Simples.
None of this give 'em a few wins to keep the gnome. Stuff 'em and keep 'em stuffed.
