They’re in a difficult position though. They can only proceed with a prosecution if there’s a realistic chance of conviction. Proving controlling and coercive behaviour under any circumstances is notoriously difficult. Under what we’re assuming these circumstances are, it would be next to zero.
When they made the charging decision they knew she might back out.
Of course proving C&C Behaviour is hard but that is what they are there for (or should be)
I really am struggling to accept he goes scot free without them at least trying.

I’m with you in theory. But all they can do is look at the evidence the police have provided them and decide if a conviction is likely. In a case like this, the victim’s word is pretty much the evidence. With that off the table it would be pointless. I noted that it also said ‘witnesses’ in plural. So it wasn’t just her pulling out.

No two cases are the same but quickly re-run the Giggs trial in your head and then take out everything the girl and her sister said. They’d be literally nothing left.

A shit load of cash paid to someone was the new evidence
It doesn't matter. That is why the government brought the changes in. Stick the accused in the Dock, put a jury in their little pews and read/play the interviews of her saying she was beaten raped and controlled.
Then let the defence barrister have a go. Let him bring the victim to court to explain why she has changed her story and let the jury decide.
What is the point in changing the law if the CPS can't be bothered trying.
What if she is murdered in 6 months time ? What price justice then.

No I am sorry but you are wrong. Her evidence is not off the table. To repeat the post I've just made.
Put him in the dock, a judge and jury can then listen to her interviews. That is the law. It was changed just for this scenario.
Let his barrister, greenwood and the woman convince the jury she lied to the cops last January. A police doctor will provide evidence of the injuries let her/ them explain it away.

The key witnesses dropped out a while ago, it’s the new evidence that’s come to light that intrigues me.

The new evidence is she has gone back to him and they are a couple again. While at the same time withdrawing her statement and refusing to testify.

Considering as it is 99% of R’s never result in prosecution in the UK his lawyers could argue that it was a kinky sex game and they were into violence and S&M. Without her testimony to refute it he would have been freed anyway.

Welcome to the justice system it’s not like on TV rather which case costs the courts the least and results and prosecution.

Always going to happen as soon as the rumours came out about her old man and then getting back together. Interesting to see what happens next

Only 2 people know the truth
one was locked up and charged
the other was the alleged victim
a key witness(out of two above)has withdrawn charges so it doesn’t take much working out what’s happened
now there playing happy families again (allegedly)
