The rags have always been piss-poor, even back in the 60's. They were never ever spoken about with hyped-up reverence and gratuitous fawning when I was at school, quite the reverse.
That disgusting excuse for a human being from Govan took over and the club spent more than anybody in order to stay relevant. There were banners everywhere demanding they get rid of the dictator: rag fans hated him and his style of football, there was immense disquiet within the board with the way bully-boy was running 'his' club, and only that fortuitous Mark Robins goal saved him from being ignominiously kicked out of the club.
That is when things changed. After that pretty much every game they played there were contentious decisions that favoured the rags: dodgy penalties, fouls they were allowed to get away, swearing abuse at the officials, and so on. The sudden wealth from the new Premier league, their refusal to share gate receipts, ludicrous sponsorship deals, and a servile, deferential broadcasting company spreading rag propaganda 24 hours a day made sure the rags stayed at the top of the tree.
Under the Ayatollah they did not play good football, it was Twitcher's favourite tactic of 'run down the wing and get some crosses in' all the time. And when you can spend what the fuck you want and not be reigned in, and you have officials happy to turn a blind eye to what is going on with your cheating, diving, time-wasting and general disregard for the rule book that everybody else has to adhere to, you cannot help but be successful.
All they are now is the mid-table mediocre club they have always been.
