Just looking for some advice as i have offers from each of my chosen uni's but now im stuck at which one to choose. I want a career in the criminal justice sector and know degrees including law or criminolgy or both together are preferred. But i have the following dilema of offers:

Manchester uni - criminology
Manchester met - law
Salford uni - law and criminology (interview in feb)

I know the salford offer should be a no brainer if i pass the interview but both man uni and man met are higher in the uni tables. The only other thing is which will look better on my cv and which will open more doors (remember to take in account the reputation of each uni). Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm don't think two courses together are preferred. Out of them three, I'd probably take Criminology at Manchester University because it's far better than the other two universities, despite it being a worse course than a standard 3 year LLB.

In the 2010-2011 Times Higher Education World University Rankings top 200 the University of Manchester is listed at 87 . The other two are not ranked. You can also research rankings of courses which may be worth doing.

Of course your opinion may be swayed by the fact that I am an alumnus of Manchester University having passed summa cum laude in Colonial Administration and Uprising Avoidance.

Manchester University will be the most highly recognised from the list, but you shouldn't choose your university simply on what you think employers will want you to have graduated from. They will only look at your CV for between 1 to 2 mins and only a small fraction of those 60 seconds will be looking at your university and grades. Choose the course best suited to you first the university should come second.

Although I'm alumnus from MU, I'd do law at the Met and then you can get on to the LPC [solicitor's course] or even Bar Vocational Course [if you like being poor] if you fancy it. Not sure how they drag Criminology out over three years tbh, as none of the fellow criminal lawyers I have come across ever bothered reading any law [I'm joking, you worthy custodians of justice, et cetera].

The 'Crime Industry' is in hard times though. CPS and CDS are cutting costs as elsewhere. Better to keep your legal options open in my view, but it's your life after all...

All for politics:

Liverpool - AB (General studies B I've already got has been taken into account so it's ABB)
Leeds - AAB
Newcastle - ABB
Salford - BBC

Just waiting on Sheffield to get back to me now :)

I would go for Criminology at Manchester personally, lot of cuts in the legal aid sector means a lot of jobs around ATM.

Mate I graduated from Manchester 18 months ago, and I currently find myself in an absolute wankstain of a job and I feeling like I'm chewing my own balls off every hour of every day (hence why I'm on good old BM in the middle of the day!)

The most important thing to remember is that you use your time at uni to the fullest. To be perfectly honest, I didn't. The most important thing these days is undoubtedly WORK EXPERIENCE.
I was a bit naive in thinking that a BA Hons in International Business, Finance and Economics would look top on my CV, so I fell into a pretty cushty internship where I lived in Hazel Grove (I lived at home throughout Uni btw). The placement was really easy which meant I had no worries in applying for the impressive placements in top professional service companies that would have meant me moving away and working a little bit harder.
This was a massive error on my part because a couple of internships in these places after my 1st and 2nd years would have looked so favourable on my CV when applying for jobs in my chosen sector after graduation.
So my 1st piece of advice would be to get looking at internships asap and get yourself that experience. My little bro is doing law at Manchester as we speak and I've told him exactly the same - just get yourself to the big law firms and local solicitors and fill up your CV as much as possible. Nobody tells you this kind of stuff when you go off to uni - I was the 1st person in my whole family to go to uni, so I had no prior knowlege of how things worked.
Just as a pointer, you'll want to get yourself applying for graduate schemes as early as possible, not like me who was doing it rushed as f**k whilst studying and sitting my finals as believe me, they are time consuming!

What you need to remember mate is its not the name of the uni that counts on your CV, its how you make the most of the time you have to get yourself noticed and get yourself employable in 3 years time. Unfortunately, its not the studying that's the hard bit lol.

Hope this helps pal

all employers care about these days is actual work experience, but a recognised/accredited course will go someway to help.

pick the right course, not the right university so read up on which is the best course. if you do get to university, try and get as much course related experience under your belt, even if it is short term voluntary placements (i know it sounds shit, but it works) - it will prove invaluable when it comes to looking for a job later in life as actual experience is irreplaceable.

good luck pal!

I did Law at MMU. Currently on the LPC.

Personally i'd go for Law rather than Criminology. Opens up more options for you to go into should you decide to change your mind about criminal. Plus criminology is part of the LLB course anyway.

All this about Manchester Uni being better than MMU so you should go there is bollox. MMU has one of the best Law Schools in the country.
