Can this damage a phone in any way ? I have just had No1 sons new phone unlocked and a few hours later, it's turned itself off and won't come back on again.
It's a Sony Ericsson T580 walkman.

The battery is charged btw

unlocking phones is it illegal, i want out also but not sure how or
if it is safe.
it's not illegal, take it to any phone shop and they'll do it for a tenner

thanks. can i quote you on that. :-)
no bother, advice given on the internet would be no excuse in court though

It may be that locking phones is illegal. The providers only do it to keep you on their network. They argue that they supply the phone 'free' so it is reasonable to restrict its use. BUT, in actual fact, the phone is not free.

if anyone saw my 'Hawaii' 'phone from the other month (a new Blackberry) I had that unlocked by my service provider.

if you just call them up and ask them for the code they might ask you why but usually they'll do it. I told them I couldn't stand my BB, and that I wanted to buy a new telephone but needed to sell this one first. They said "OK", we'll email you the instructions, and they did.

cost me nothing.

- sometimes, depending on the model of telephone, you might find internet instructions or codes that could unlock them. I think there is also software that generates the subsidy codes (that unlock) for some models, and if you can get this software, you only need punch in the IME number (or whatever they call it) and it'll spit out the unlock code for you.
