Unpopular Opinions on Footballers

I think Kinkladze would have been better suited to today’s formations that seem a lot more fluid than 25 years ago. Most sides back then were rigid 442. He was neither a winger nor a centre midfielder in the traditional sense. If played in a 433 I reckon he would have looked immense. Cracking player but probably in the wrong side at the wrong time unfortunately.

I was thinking about Kinkladze for this thread when I first saw it but thought I’d get too much stick…

I think there’s a reason that he played for relegated City and relegated Derby and never got a sniff at any decent side.
Wuss.

;-)

He was a fantastic player, but there is an amount of revisionist thinking about him on here. He did have a habit of going missing in tough away games. Yes, he stood out like a beacon in that side. But there weren't many shining lights in the squad back then, to be polite about them!

If Gio had a player like Silva feeding him passes in areas where he only had a couple of players to beat to get a shot off he would have been immense. He would also win (legitimately) 10+ penalties a season.
