I couldn't see another thread on this. It looks like the regime in Iran is about to be toppled. It look's like the "Supreme Leader" has fled and there are reports that members of the security services are defecting to the protesters. This is quite a seismic event if the regime is overthrown.

Depends if the army want to overthrow the leader if not they’ll just threaten them all and kill a few! Watching it though doesn’t look like the army getting involved..

Thank you Mr Trump. Please take all the credit. At least until it all goes wrong because of Biden and the VenazHaitians.

It would be great news indeed, not only for the Iranians themselves but the world in general. We'll see how it turns out.

Good I hope they succeed. Whilst many Iranians didnt support the Shah, they seem to hate the current theocratic regime even more.

Iran is a beautiful country with so much potential. Regime change here would almost certainly make the Middle East a more stable and safer place.

Regimes don’t topple as easily as they once did though. They’ve got better at containing dissent and reading the signs of potential trouble and locking it down. It doesn’t make them infallible, far from it, but the threshold for success is much higher than it used to be, especially in a relatively developed and educated country, which Iran certainly is.

Not sure in that.

It’s been ruled by forceful religion since 1980. The power vacuum created when/if it collapses will ignite multiple internal factions, vying for revenge/bigger pieces of pie.
And then there’s the external factions, you could see US Trump going gung-ho for the oil.

My only hope would be your statement of ‘relatively developed and educated’ - if a set of moderate progressive leaders can come from that, get the backing of the non-religious army/militia, then there’s a chance… but there’s been precious few peaceful and successful (longterm) regime changes from autocratic bases.

Plenty arose and sustained after the Berlin Wall fell.
