US Politics Thread

A Silver Lining?

If there's solace to be found in the tumultuous, unprecedented political maelstrom the USA now finds itself in, it's that circumstances are so outrageous that voters could well decide that they've had enough of the right-wing agenda: Roe v. Wade overturned, mass shootings continue, SCOTUS blurs the line between church and state, the former President clearly guilty of seditious conspiracy, and so on.
Now we find out if sheer voting numbers can overcome SCOTUS sanctioned extreme gerrymandering and the wholesale substitution of nonpartisan election officials/workers with far-right zealots across many states.

Very very dystopian

And several states want to setup registration databases for pregnant (or all) women to track their whereabouts so they can be prosecuted if they leave the state to get an abortion in another state where it is legal.

Many experts are also advising women to delete period tracking apps and the collected data, as many states can apparently access the data and use it to determine when you likely become pregnant and then potentially use mail order abortion pills (among other uses).

This is a full Evangelical Christian-Fascist takeover of the red states.

And—what many seem to be missing—is that SCOTUS are not going to simply stop at allowing states to decide for themselves (as if they truly believe abortion is “murder”, why would they allow it any where). They have already shown completely arbitrary application (or lack thereof) of the state (or tribal) rights doctrine, so no reason they won’t eventually go against it.

And, even if they don’t, each state is only one or two wild election results from having it banned in their state. That becomes more likely if SCOTUS is allowed to continually deem extreme gerrymandering as lawful and ultimately decide the independent state legislature theory is constitutional.

If you are a women, an ethnic/religious minority, a member of the LGBTQ+ community, a Native American, or even a disabled person, things are not looking good.

And any sane person, regardless of their political affiliation, religious beliefs, gender, sexual persuasion, ethnicity, or physical/mental condition should be frightened and furious.

I heard on Fox the other day one state offers/intends 10k bonus to anyone who prevents an abortion/a girl slipping away to have one?

Can't be true, surely?
It is true. It is the same “the state is not enforcing it so we aren’t violating the constitution or any other federal laws” tactic that Texas employed for their de facto abortion ban prior to the Roe v Wade reversal.

Citizen enforcement is the new way of getting around established precedent and law until your holy high council… I mean, the Supreme Court, can nullify the relevant precedent or law.

And even after, it’s a “cheap” way to scale enforcement and create a religious ‘citizen-police’ surveillance state.
