Var debate 2019/20

I'd doubt very much that the tech they're using is good enough to definitively call offside or not every time. If they admitted it, we'd probably be happier about it but they won't because the people who run and broadcast football have traditionally (historically?) chosen to insult people's intelligence, so they just claim it is without actually being able or willing to prove it.

Great article here about VAR tech in other sports which makes exactly the same point as you

Incidently VAR can only be used to validate encroachment into the penalty area for missed penalties. The Linesman is supposed to detect keepers coming off their lines. Today's yellow flag failed to spot the West Ham keeper coming off his line so the remit of VAR actually has to be increased as he messed up.

The chalked off third goal was a brilliant passage of play. Then it's disallowed because a fraction of Sterling's arm was supposedly offside. Which is subjective on when the person watching the replay freezes the frame. Var wasn't brought in for marginal decisions like this. It was brought in to correct clear errors, or something missed by the officials. They need to quickly stop shit like this happening or it will just lead to a whole shitstorm of accusations when other teams score similar goals and they are allowed.

Another great point. The cult of VAR has now been rebranded though as being an objective source of truth for marginal line calls that the tech can’t possibly call right.

Allow a “refs call” for the marginal ones and the problem goes away. Unfortunately football’s governing bodies are too arrogant to listen to the people who pay their wages

I think you are being a bit dramatic there mate.
How many times over the years have we scored a goal , celebrated wildly, only to see the home/away fans giving us the v sign and wanker signs only to realise the linesman has flagged offside.
For me it's the same thing I will still celebrate wildly and if it goes to VAR I will celebrate again!!!!
Its only early days yet give it time.
I think the game will benefit in the end , especially for City
But in those circumstances I know within 2 seconds via a flag or a hand wave of the ref.

Today, I didn’t celebrate sterlings goal or offside goal, nor did I celebrate agueros pen. I sat there, i waited and I had a good feeling.

For me, VAR completely ruins what I’m in football for. Not sure what it is but next week, we play spurs and I’ll wait for VAR to confirm any goal, whether it’s for or against city before I make comment. Imagine the Aguero moment and waiting and watching for VAR to confirm?

Nah not for me. I’m done

As I said earlier in the thread, there should be a “margin for error” allowed on offside goals in order to give the attacker the advantage on marginal calls, that way we remove the issue about “when did the ball leave the passer’s foot” and it would be easy enough to implement as it’d just be an adjusted line by whatever the discretionary amount that was agreed upon.

Is correct and that is what it was supposed to be for. Luckily today it didn't cost us but it will. I hope they tweak it so it's rarely used. If they keep checking every fucking goal for the tiniest infringement it will become farcical. Look at the handball in the champions league game last season. Three people next to me had replays in seconds on their phones for God's sake showing it was handball. Yet the dick of a ref looks at a screen for around two minutes, shrugs his shoulders and gives the goal. Incredible. Why couldn't someone from BT who were covering the game say, "Here have a look at this angle." He looks, sees the handball, no goal. In theory it is good but in practice it needs a lot of tweaking yet.
