VAR Discussion Thread | 2024/25

I still haven't had anyone who supports the Video Assistant Referee answer my question.
Why did the Var operators, using a better version of the Premier Leagues Var, take 4 minutes to decide Haalands goal should stand.
Further, can they say with 100% certainty what offence the officials were looking at.

3rd time lucky.

Just watching the 4 minutes it took for Palace to celebrate their goal.
Progress …
That after their first goal was ruled out on the corner, for the ball supposedly curving out of play then back in according to the lino. It went to VAR for a review, to check to see if the ball indeed did go out. Only VAR didn't have a camera on the end line, so it could not be verified, prompting them to stick with the call on the pitch, denying the goal. The best camera they had was some far away fish eye camera with a bendy end line. An absolute shambles.

Imagine the top league in the world with all the investment that has gone into VAR not having a camera on the end line to confirm the most basic of checks. You can't make this stuff up. It's a total clown show this VAR. And the saga continues, match in match out, the charade never ends.

Yeah but a YouGov poll said the fans want it….

And folk wonder why the refs at the lower league level are so shit when the so called top class refs continue to get it wrong even with technology.

Simply bin it till we get a group of refs that can get the decisions it fooking spoils the game anyhow.
Should be a quick glance at the ref to see if hes given it and thats it not fooking sat there wondering if your joy is gonna be squashed.
How many years did we survive without it ???,

'Cos they were trying to find the slightest excuse to chalk it off! And when Mk1 didn't fit it would take am full four mins before they gotto MkX and called it a goal.

That was the only solution. And the two extra officials monitoring the goal line wouldn't be needed in every match. Similar to how in baseball, in the regular season there are only 4 umpires in the infield but in the post season there are 6 umpires including two in the outfield down the line. With baseball adopting video reviews in recent years there is now redundancy in having the 2 extra officials for more meaningful matches in the post season, but they still appear.

But prior to video reviews in baseball, the Left Field and Right Field umpires were needed in more important games to ensure accuracy of hits down the line, to see if the ball in or outside the line. Well a similar concept was attempted to be implemented in football with the two extra officials on each goal-line, but like you said, for one reason or another "it didn't seem to achieve anything and it was quickly abandoned".

I would like to explore that statement as it is crucial to understanding how we ended up with VAR. The 2 extra officials monitoring each goal line would theoretically solve every problem that would have caused VAR to be needed.

So why was it abandoned? Because the statement "it didn't seem to achieve anything" is curious, what would there be to achieve other than to provide a "backup" set of eyes to catch what the on-field referee may have missed, which would presumably only be a rare occurrence to which you wouldn't notice them on a match to match basis. But if a howler happened, they could run up to the ref and alert when needed.

Can we pinpoint when this trial took place and how long it lasted for? Were there situations where the extra goal-line official alerted the on-field referee to something he missed? Given the decay of the sport due to VAR and its clear need for the VAR experiment to be put to a halt once and for all, we'll need an alternative to prevent the kinds of errors (the rare howler, etc) that VAR set out to prevent. The two extra officials near the goal-line, maybe not for every match, maybe only for more significant matches, similar to how baseball adds to the two umpires in their post season.

Video review is very harmful to football, on many levels and this is not a satisfactory situation as it presently stands. The idea of two extra officials on the goal-line, for every match, or for only select matches would be a much more practical, less expensive, less aggravating, less controversial, and a more natural solution.
I want four linesmen, 1 in each quarter. Not some gimp stood behind the goals, where they would be good for precisely fuck all.

Oh right, fair enough. additional linesmen/refs on the pitch i wouldn't be against but still be confident they'd screw up far more than a ref getting tech help.

Ask the fans to keep VAR and implement it better or scrap it completely. I don't think it would be a landslide. You keep saying this - why don't you set this up and find out.
What downside is there to having 4 linesmen? each one responsible for their quarter. It's no different to now but means they can keep up with play a lot better.

Too many cooks. Linesman are virtually always in line with the second last defender or on the half way line. And it’s actually easier to judge an offside when the players are further away and all in your eye line, than when they’re up close.

And what happens when one flags for offside and the other one thinks he’s on?

I noticed in our game and yesterday that the flags went up quicker than normal certainly compared to our game against Madrid I wonder if there’s been a change, I still think it’s dangerous to let play continue when it’s blindingly obvious.

If Var is that good let's do away with officials altogether.
It would stop all the incorrect decisions, think of it, a 90 minute match with no mistakes.

It happened three times in the Tottenham, United game also. One of them in particular, was off, but was really tight.

I’m sure it can’t be coincidence and different guidance has been given. It’s a good thing. It’s only intended for those really close ones, when the linesman can’t be sure. And it might be unfashionable to say, but it is very rare that they get any but the really tight ones wrong these days.

Another (older) vid on VAR tech with some good points on perspective 90 seconds in.

Jota dive and awarded a penalty v Wolves at the weekend - thankfully we have VAR who overturned this decision. Some would rather scrap VAR and see the likes of Liverpool and Man Utd get awarded penalties on a regular basis everytime they dive in the box.
