VAR Discussion Thread | 2024/25

If you see back I strongly defend the officials, it’s an impossible job at times with the fractional tight calls, the speed of the game, the cheating, the crowds and bench appealing for everything and the constant scrutiny.

It’s one of my strongest arguments for VAR, refs need help!
Apologies wasn’t directed at you, it’s not the easiest job in the world and mistakes are made, the correct implementation of VAR should go a long way to eradicate obvious mistakes.
Unfortunately it’s the ‘interpretation’ of the rules by VAR officials which needs looking at.

I can't be bothered responding to you anymore..if someone says the sun is hot you would say no it isn't..you just seem to want to be contrary to anyone else's opinion..
VAR is fucking crap and that's my opinion

Nope, I just defend tech help for officials. Only a couple pages ago and all way through this thread I’ve sympathised with those against VAR and can see others points of views.

If you genuinely believe that was an intentional back pass then yes, let’s not bother.

I’m sure you are correct on your observation that no one was concerned. But, you were BARELY correct and it was nowhere near as clear of obvious as you believed, just because the movements exaggerated the gaps between players.

But, good on yer!
Been watching football for 60 years and I can see what is offside and the Lino would have called it pre-VAR He didn’t flag because, admittedly it was close but they have fine for over 100 years of football until this ridiculous micro examination of flawed pictures 50fps The spirt of the law is now ignored

I honestly didn’t see if he called it AFTER the goal, but it was very close, especially silly with the two players moving in opposite directions as the ball is played.

Admittedly, even 1 second later, he looks miles offside, but that’s not when the decision is made.

I’ve said repeatedly, if we are now measuring with a micrometer, then let’s give the attacker an advantage and use the back heel on the boot of the defender versus the toe of the boot on the attacker. That way, body leaning doesn’t come into play.

These tight offside calls will be a thing of the past once we get the SAOT confirmation graphic that is directly in line with the play.

We might get 2 or 3 a month across all matches where it's just a players toes or knee in it.

The problem is that it is open to interpretation.

The referee could have easily interpreted that as a deliberate back pass and there would have been nothing anyone could have done about it.

Really seen lots of delayed decisions in UCL They have to call it semi as some offside decisions are
subjective as to interference and a human has to be involved

So basically officials on the pitch can do no wrong then ? if they don't flag because they thought it was onside you will excuse them and say 'yeh thats VAR fault that is', same for Refs not giving any decision.

Linos have a very tough job to do to spot the run and point of contact, often so many are absolute fractional margins - I don't blame them for getting it wrong at all - and i don't want them flagging wrongly every time, i would rather they have some tech help especially when it leads to a goal.
Semi auto being bought it 'should' be even more accurate and faster - why would we not want that in the game?! madness to just put the onus on one bloke with a flag expected to get these marginal decisions correct - Yes, that's how it was before and if you look at some old highlights it was a shambles some of the decisions (often labelled corrupt)

You want to go back to this, i don't.

Why use one of the most bent games in modern times to justify how good VAR is? Is this game any better and a good show of how good VAR and how much better decision making is now;

VAR allegedly gets involved when clear and obvious mistakes are made. The CL is no better. The foul on McAtee v Real was indisputably well inside the penalty area and yet a free kick outside the box was given. This has barely been mentioned by commentators and the lack of outrage has been deafening. It seems to have been airbrushed from history. Whilst the result of the game wasn’t affected, the validity of VAR clearly should have been. What’s the actual point of it if not to correct errors like this?

'Well inside' is stretching it?

OK but even that picture shows one foot obviously in the box - still a penalty. The view I saw albeit on TV showed him clearly in the box. Perhaps it’s a few frames on from the picture posted. I’ve seen penalties given when a forwards foot was barely touching the line. If our “red friends” had been on the end of that decision they’d have been demanding a replay as they would have been obviously denied the certainty of a glorious 4-3 comeback. There wasn’t a mention that VAR dummies had even noticed - perhaps they were too busy drooling over the Mbappe hatrick?

Ignore the wum. He's always right. We are always wrong, he's always telling us where we are wrong.
Like you, I saw it, the commentators saw it and so did millions of others.
The wum will not accept Var is ever wrong because then accusations of cheating have to be discussed.

It's a shit show run by incompetents and crooks.

So was Rugby, Tennis and Cricket. we evolve. If Refs can have some tech help to correct the vast majority of injustices (which it does) then i will always be for that i'm afraid.
Rugby. Tennis. Cricket. You’re welcome to watch that shite with all its technology.
Leave the football to us . Ta

What’s this tech help?
It’s a ref watching a video and they can freeze and slow motion
Using slow motion and freeze frame to determine a “clear and obvious” error is an oxymoron
Using a video 50fps which can either be off or on depending which frame is choice with debatable parallax correction taken to a mm is also nonsense
Semi automatic
How can something be semi automatic it’s either automatic or it’s not?
Ha ha ha. I only partially murdered him guv.
