VAR Discussion Thread | 2024/25

The lengthy check for a potential penalty for handball against Madrid was ridiculous. The hand was low and it was a volleyed effort right next to him.

I have a feeling they were never going to award it after seeing the 1st replay angle and the forensic check was just posturing to muddy the VARdrid narrative.

Lee Hendre Speaking to Football League World (9 April), the former Aston Villa midfielder said: “I did the game last night on commentary, and the two goals that were disallowed were absolutely ludicrous. They were two really, really bad decisions from either official.

“They had a good view of the first one, and to have two goals ruled out that were clearly and obviously goals, this is where the Championship and lower leagues do suffer for not having VAR.”

This is the exactly what it will be when/if VAR is scrapped.

How come lower leagues without VAR are still calling for it ? When it’s killed the game.

Because everyone thinks something they don't have will solve all their problems for them. Until they have it. Perfectly normal behaviour. Call it football's Brexit.

And who the fuck is Lee Hendre? Pretty ironic they are calling for complete accuracy on linesman's calls but can't get his name right.

They call for it when something goes against them, week in, week out, fans and staff inolved with championship team and lower say they are great leagues because they don't want VAR. We are what, 6 years in or so and it is as shit as ever. Admit defeat.

but this is exactly what it will be like week in week out without VAR - Farcical wrong decisions and fans calling for VAR. That's the reality.

It wasn't week in week out. It was "lampards non-goal" or "Maradonas handball". They were the reasons for VAR on the whole. Other mistakes were mistakes that happened all the time, and still happen with VAR.

So now they referee very nearly everything through VAR. When all we wanted was to stop those incidents above. Its gone out of control. We didn't want this.

That's not true, look at those Leeds goals, very clearly onside. yet flagged off. no one would be happy with that and 'just get on with it', every week there was meltdown in the stands against the officials, fans fuming, phoning in radio and discussing the bad decisions on MOTD - Lets not forget the clear diving without zero contact and being awarded a penalty was becoming more and more prevalent - Officials can not keep up with the speed and cheating in the modern game - they simply need some tech help.

I watched Crewe the other night, the ref got all sorts of stuff wrong. Basic stuff, made me worry about the lower standard of refs since last time I went. But he cancelled a thrown in goal, gave corners when everyone could see it was a goal kick, just basic errors. The general feeling at that game was not let's bring in VAR. It was like pre-var where we just moaned and bitched about the ref.... I think you are misrepresenting what it was like before VAR, we were not all begging for it week in week out. More appropriate or accurate is that we were asking for better refs.

And refs have got worse since VAR I think.

Majority of fans wanted VAR in the game.

In 2017, prior to VAR's introduction, a Football Supporters' Association survey found that 74.6% of fans favored the use of video referees to support on-field officials with game-changing decisions.

An obscure article from after its introduction in 2018 by Compare.com asking 2000 fans is proof? It even lists the Maradona, Lampard goals as fan reasons for VAR to be introduced.

We dont want the micromanagement.

Is clear onsides being flagged offside micromanagement?

No micromanagement. Clear and obvious errors only. Not dodgy fouls or possible handball in the build up unless clear and obvious (clear and obvious should be defined as - even the offending party thought “forkinell we got away with one there”). All VAR discussions to be relayed via stadia tannoy systems. Offsides should be on-field decisions by the assistant referee with captains having 2x appeals per game (1 unused challenge can be carried forward but only ever a maximum of 3 per game). If a VAR appeal is successful, the captain retains his number of appeals. Keep management teams out of it and ban touch side iPads.

If we have to use technology- let’s keep it simple.

Is clear onsides being flagged offside micromanagement?

No. Over-ruling linesmen when it is impossible for the human eye and ear to make that decision is micro-management.

How many times does it have to be explained? If the people in the ground can't possibly judge an offside, just leave it alone. The game should be played in the stadium for the people who pay to go watch it. Not for the benefit of people like you and me who watch on the tv with slow motion over-analysis. There is no-one more important to football than the fans who pay ridiculous amounts of money to actually go watch it. Any changes that are made for any reason should take that into account first.

Is clear onsides being flagged offside micromanagement?
That's a ridiculous question surely. No it isn't. And automation will sort that out, because VAR isn't deemed fit for it.

Micromanagement would be (in the case of a goal) checking for offside, then check if there was a handball, then another check for offside on another player, then a check for a potential foul. Then a decision. That's random

Automation will kick in and it will remove all that shit, it will decide upon the one thing. Because we don't need all that other shit.

All I can say is, fuck off. It's no better and certainly not quicker.
No doubt watching at home you had it all explained to you.
I was there, no one knew what was happening. City even showed a replay of one of the goals only to later say it was being reviewed.

Even Rico Lewis ignored it when he took a quick free kick whilst the time wasters were ergh still reviewing something. (Maybe their Ocado order)

Tv wise the semi automated thing worked quickly to give a decision on offside but they need to show the actual image on the screen quicker though as it wasn’t til @10 mins later they showed it on tv.

Literally gone full circle. Now with automation replacing VAR it takes seconds to make a decision, which is what it was before VAR when it was the ref. (And VAR still made incorrect calls!). Nice to see some progress.
