VAR (PL introduction 2019)

i agree it will change the experience but fans will adapt - from what i've seen so far, once VAR has decided the outcome there's more celebrations, in some ways you get to experience the europhia of scoring twice in the space of a few minutes.
I wouldn't say there's more celebrations. Just allowance to continue celebrations with some relief after an annoying interruption.

Stop!

Carry on

But linesman were getting offside decisions right around 95% of the time without VAR.
Yeah and most people could get close to that most of the time (as there’s literal day light between a striker a defender). But it’s was always a toss of a coin whether they got them right or wrong on a close call.

Thank you. It's broken my heart but after what happened in the CL against Spurs, and what I read on German and Dutch fans forums the following day, my mind was made up.
What did the Dutch & German fans have to say , I believe the end of var will come from what these fans do , they get organised & i’m Surprised theyve not seen it off over there.

Unsurprisingly, and given our own experience of it, they regarded it as having destroyed the match-day experience. They want rid of it but now that the TV companies have complete control of the game there is no chance of it going. Mr Murdoch and those nice people at BT will be calling all the shots next year and it's going to be a nightmare.

Makes me go cold the whole thing, fans still have power though but many seem to take the view that it’ll work out in the end, like you I believe they’re stealing matchgoing fans game & packaging it for the neutral tv watching masses round the world . We fight or lose it forever , I was adamant I was packing it in but relented mainly due to my Mrs who knows that football has been my life ....i’ll Give it till Christmas but I think I know what’s coming .

Whatever happens with it, and has been noted on here by a lot of posters, that Aguero moment has disappeared from the game and won't reappear unless VAR goes.

Watching VAR in action in the women’s World Cup i’m Already regretting re-newing, it’s changed the game completely , the Americans & maybe Chinese will love it though.

The man handling VAR to detect mms on offside decisions is fucking awful, In the scenarios where the defender and attacker are moving in opposite directions at 3 metres per seconds (very conservative ball park figure, most sprints are between 5mps and 7mps https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4327365/)
that's 600cm a second. That's upto 24cm difference in positioning per frame at the 25fps they elected to use, even against a static defender and a forward running at half his fastest speed its upto 12cm difference per frame.
Yet even with the limitation of the technology in use and against the rules of basic physics we are suppose to acknowledge that the super powers of fifa, uefa, fa et al are able to precisely determine when the ball was played and decide which frame to draw a line on indicating someones big toe was 4mm ahead of the defenders arse?

For me they are trying to claim to be infallible and denying the limitations that distance = speed x time doesn't actually apply to football and present an artificial line on a screen that's been determined by opinion not fact as factual. The obvious tweak to make it workable reintroduce clear and obvious errors like the Liverpool west ham game and benefit of doubt to go with the attacking team. An opinion of someone being 4cm offside presented as fact with a margin of error of at least 12cms is plain stupid.

Quite. Still think serg was onside in the spurs game

Is it? And at what cost. If you take the passion from sport what is left. May as well watch two kids play Fifa on a console if you’re that keen to have technology make decisions. This will ruin football. It’s shite on many levels but the biggest issue is that watching something in slow motion will always make it appear different than real time therefore the decision you make is not like for like. The Lorente handball is all you need as an example of why VAR is shite. Now people are saying we need to change rules to suit VAR? Leave the game alone it’s the biggest sport in the world for a reason. The goal line tech was enough.

The Llorente decision is not all you need to judge VAR as shite. It was poor no doubt. And should have been called handball and they need to learn from it. But its getting loads of stuff called right. Brazil goals all chalked off were all the right calls. And the england ladies game similar. The game would have been 1 all and not 2 nil because of incorrect calls. If we used your logic of focussing one one bad call as reason to not use something we’d have dispensed with referees 135 years ago!!

We need to change certain rules because there not fit for purpose. Thats not VAR’s fault.

When a ball is kicked the ball is in contact with the player for a period of time. At what point does time freeze to determine offside? Is it at the point of first contact or last contact?

My point is that if VAR is going to overrule on field offside decisions where there is only 6 inches in it, by moving forward or backward a frame you can manipulate the result.

Fair question, i would say the first contact and if its that tight that they cant distinguish then let it go...!

Just be honest when you watch VAR in action has it enhanced your enjoyment of the greatest game in the world or not. The use of it for England ladies was farcical was it not? I’d rather keep the rules of football rather than create a new sport to suit VAR which if it was working would not be controversial ala the goal line tech.

I personally hate VAR. it’s going to take away a lot of the excitement and spontaneity of football. I actually think if the premier league was the only league that didn’t adopt it, we’d get an even bigger fan base across the world. The world loves our league for the fast pace, physicality and end to end excitement. Give them what they want! Every goal next season I’ll have to wait 20 seconds before I can relax and properly celebrate

I was initially neutral about VAR,now I'm against it.
A, its way too slow, and looks like it won't get appreciably quicker.
B,It's still open to interpretation, fine margins, regarding offsides.

If we must have VAR it should be used like in tennis. The team manager or captain gets 1 "challenge" per half,or similar.

I initially thought this but then don’t you think managers would just challenge the biggest decisions in a game automatically to try and get something ruled out. They’d have challenged the Aguerooo moment. All the biggest most iconic goals in football would always be challenged.
