Vat on Independent school fees?

Quite simple really, particularly in the context of student loans.

If your degree isn’t likely to secure you a job that will provide the income level required to repay your student loan in full, then it’s not worthwhile for society.
If there was a dislike button, your post could break records.
Sadly you would have no idea why.

You can, yes, but you shouldn’t expect everyone else to pick up the tab for you.

I think it is a slippery slope going down the route of saying what is and what isn't worthwhile. But I'm a big believer that key industries that we require should have fully funded degrees as long as the person gains employment in that industry for a number of years.

I’m opposed to anything that makes it less attainable to people however I think it’s a bit of a storm in a tea cup.

The government are unlikely to gain anything like the money they suggest - I think Labour will be happy if they can make it stick and Starmer can show he really is a leftie after all and the schools/parents will be happy if it doesn’t hurt.

Ultimately schools have the power here IMHO, if the worst came to the worst and they were in danger of losing kids to make themselves unviable then these schools could make everyone self employed, treat everything as private tuition (this is exempt from VAT) and just act as a billing service provider thus exempting themselves from VAT. Good luck challenging that HMRC!!
Agreed, and there are always routes to avoiding contribution for those who seek them. Sometimes, it is just about what you stand for.

Is it a storm in a teacup? Well, it is one of very many changes that could be made, and the list of items VAT exempt throws up a number of peculiarities, but the prevailing wind is that society is poorer, and many, many people are struggling, so to have charitable status and VAT exemption for private schooling looks like a gross favour for those with money, while school budgets see those who cannot afford private schooling experience reduced teacher numbers, cuts to SENCO provision, and constant fundraising by schools to try and balance the books.

It’s the politics of envy and nothing else. Parents who send their children to private school should actually get a tax refund.

I couldn't give a fuck about what the LWNJ’s on here think - so don’t bother replying. You are wasting your time.

It’s all about ideology from privately educated lefties.
Diddums is upset.

Like state education is free?

Anyroad by that logic private health cover is a luxury good. We have the NHS

Private pension provision is a luxury good. There is a state funded provision.

Sky TV a luxury good. We have free TV.
Free tv you say?

What a dickhead!
Nurses will never pay their loans off.
To pay a student loan off you need to start your career on £45K according to MSE.
