Is stupidity more common in American than elsewhere? - I think not.
Still, the OP's post is surprising - but on reflection, maybe not.
In High School I experienced first hand the popular American sentiment that being "smart" was not cool - at all. Disdain of learning was widespread. And getting by - graduating from one grade to the other and then to High School - didn't take any sort of effort at all. The village idiot could have done so - but so too could the intelligent but disdainful of education.
