I worked for the international division of an Indiana based US company in this country. Every year there would be an annual draw for hourly paid and non-managerial staff at each location for an exchange trip. One year a middle aged female employee won the US draw and as well as neither she nor her husband having a passport they also didn't possess a suitcase and asked the company to buy two for them. (As well as passports). The reason they gave for never having had a suitcase was that they'd never needed one as they'd never been outside Indiana in their lives. These weren't poor people either. The company was booming and everybody in it had shit loads of highly valuable share options. They were just parochial hicks.
