Villa (H) Post Match Thread

Anyone seen or not the Ronaldo goal last night.I was amazed that our goal was allowed to stand and this is why. I know the LOTG state it was a correct decision but how many of us knew that until Walton's grovelling explanation of the the decision was correct ? I bet not many .VAR guys in the van were certainly more clued up and switched on than us match going/armchair experts .Be honest with yourself
Walton still got it wrong when he tried to correct himself. He used the wrong part of the law.

The goal is straightforward to me. When the ball is headed forward by a City player, Rodri is offside. Once Mings makes a deliberate attempt to play the ball, Rodri is no longer offside.

This law has come up a few times in the recent past- I remember Vardy scoring one for England where he was in an offside position, but it came off of the head of the Wales defender (I think Ashley Williams?) so the goal stood. Last night's incident looked a bit different but it applies the same law.

Perfectly good goal and, while fans can be forgiven for not knowing about the technicality of the law, Mings certainly should have been aware of the threat Rodri was posing.

Rodri is the kind of man who probably knows the football lawbook like the back of his hand just in case he ever needs to remember technicalities like that. I'm sure there are a lot of players in our squad who wouldn't have realised that they were allowed to do what he did.

the big thing is the linesman did not flag or the referee blow his whistle and in the rule book its a goal
both officials got it spot on and for a change city got the luck

Mings was in the wrong and the bbc MOTD clearly shown him looking at rodri even a second glance over his should
so why not just leave the ball or head it clear ? Ming was show boating and lost control and rodri was clever and fast thinking and deservers some credit

if it was the other way round villa would be jumping up and down celebrating the goal and we would be slagging off rodri or stones for making a mistake

People can cry all they want. The rule is clear
That part of the law does not relate to the Rodri incident because Rodri didn’t receive the ball from Mings.

Further down in the laws it states;
“a player moving from, or standing in, an offside position is in the way of an opponent and interferes with the movement of the opponent towards the ball this is an offside offence if it impacts on the ability of the opponent to play or challenge for the ball”

This is where it shows that Rodri was not offside because he didn’t impede Mings or challenge for the ball at the point of Mings controlling the ball here:

I knew straight away after the replay it was a goal.

As soon as Mings purposely got it under control but then turned into Rodri, it was a new phase of play.

Mings attempted to gain an advantage but turned out the wrong way, luckily for Rodri and us.

Is the rule different for keepers? Say someone has a shot which a keeper parries and the ball rebounds to someone who was in an offside position when the shot was taken. The offside player hasn't impaired the keeper, or interfered with the previous phase of play in any way. They then put the ball in the net. Does the goal stand? I guess the "quality" of the touch is taken into account. Last night Mings controlled the ball and tried to play = Rodri onside. Keeper parries it/no control = offside?

This:-

There's no issue with that one either, the first man headed it against the back of his own players head.

Whether we knew the rules or not is immaterial, the ref, assistant ref & the VAR people knew them.

Edit: was it not given then?

See my post please

It's hilarious seeing how much 'controversy' the Bernardo goal and the penalty have dredged up. Both laws are clear and simple. Both laws were applied 100% correctly. The goal and the penalty were legitimate. End of story, no further discussion.

Thought that was a great game to watch, reasonably open and end to end at times. Puckering a bit at 0-0 and 75 mins in, but you have to trust that these players will find the answer and they did. Credit Villa in that they didn't just sit back and try to counter attack a goal with the long hoof down the pitch, they played some decent passing football at times and created a few chances. They're unrecognisable from the shower that played last season. The Dias clearance at 0-0 taking it off the Villa boy's toe was unbelievable defending. He's some player Dias - cajoling, leading, talking and great positional sense. Very mature for someone of 23 years.

The better team won, of that there is no doubt. We created a lot last night and could (and should) have put another 2 or 3 away. You could possibly argue that Villa maybe deserved a goal but there is no way on this earth they deserved to draw. We're nicely placed, game in hand. The injuries take the gloss off a little bit, so hopefully Walker and KDB get back quickly. Keep things in perspective, but we are starting to click.....which is ominous for the rest.

I love the whole “it’s a stupid rule” because they are in fact admitting that it is a rule. Thought the handball rule was stupid and it fucked us over against spurs more than once and against liverpool, and numerous other times but hey ho what can u do about it
