I think some were questioning how true the reports were when the wages aspect seemed to wide of the mark.

No. Some are moaning and whinging about the fee etc, like every bloody season.
You'd think they were having to pay the bill.

I'm not sure why people get so hung up about the price we may or may not pay for players? If the player is deemed to be worth it by the manager and it's who he feels will improve our squad then so be it.

Prices go up every summer and we are shopping in the top section so it's going to cost a lot more but if we get who we want then why bother frothing over the cost

I think that if there is any central defender worth breaking the bank for, then this is it. A safe and solid choice. I don't think that he'd let the fee get to him either.

He covers all the attributes that we are lacking in defence: pace, physicality, height, positional awareness. Plus, I don't see any other viable alternatives.
