I must admit a lot of the "showboating" ones were absolute crap.I think the true value of "showboating" was Mario scoring with his shoulder ... on purpose.

I think you'll find that the game you describe was called 'Wembley'.

No idea where 'your way' was but you would have been drummed out of Urmston for called 'Wembley' by the name of 'headers and volleys'! I was brilliant at this game if I remember correctly.

Nope, mine niether.
As a kid for me Wembley was where you used one goalkeeper and everybody outfield was effectively a one man team, once you scored you were through and sat out til the next round. Last left was always eliminated until each round led to just 2 guys left (like a final at wembley). It was then optional if the goal count required was raised and if the guys sat out were used as defenders in any way to make the final harder.
Headers and volleys was more a team against a keeper where misses or illegal strikes gave points to the keeper, and headers scored 2 and volleys 1 for the outfield players. If the outfield won the keeper had to stay between the sticks, if the keeper won then the last outfield player to give away the deciding point became the goalie.
Ah, the memories.
So, who's going to explain Curby and Crab football then ?
