So a battle of the home nations, shame one of them has to go home now but they’ve both probably already met their expectations. However, one of them will be playing in a European quarterfinal.
Northern Ireland made it to the knockouts via being the 4th best 3rd place finishing team, albeit wasn’t as close in reality as it looks on paper. They were in a tough group, finishing behind Poland and Germany, as expected, losing to both but they surpassed expectations by beating Ukraine, which was enough to send them to the knockouts on goal difference.
Goal scorers so far: McAuley (1), McGinn (1)
Wales in a sense have also surpassed expectations by topping a group; most would have expected England to do. They finished on 6 points, despatching Slovakia and Russia but were beaten at the death in their 2nd game against England. They arguably have Europe’s in form player as well; Gareth Bale leads the tournament as the joint top goal scorer. Aaron Ramsey also deserves a mention, as he has arguably been their best player so far. Better than he’s been all season with Arsenal.
Goal scorers so far: Bale (3), Robson-Kanu (1), Taylor (1), Ramsey (1)
Winner plays Hungary or Belgium.
Probably one of the better draws N. Ireland could have got as emotion may improve their chances but I think Wales have got this one, 2-1.
