I've read a lot of junk by the press today, but I still haven't found a more balanced article than this one:

how does a shinned shot from a deflected cross become the greatest goal?, good lord!!!

get real. all bicycle kicks are a lottery.
the deflected cross has no relevance to the outcome of the attempt.
the ball comes across and its an instinct thing. you either look a total nob as you miss the ball, put it in row z, out for a throw in etc. or your a kin hero as it goes in the only part of the goal not covered by the keeper.
unfortunately today it came off for him, hate the spud faced twat but the idea and execution was as good as ive seen.
lets not demeen ourselves by pretending otherwise.
if it was any of our players scored that goal we would be power wanking over it for months and with good reason.
we more than matched the rags yesterday. we lost to goal of the season.
they know it
not sure we do

I think the poster above you means how the actual shot went off Rooney's shin, not that Zaba deflected it towards him.

This. If it was a city player and they had done something like that it would probably be reagrded on here as the goal of the season. As much as I hate the granny shagger and all the stick I'm going to get at college tomorrow, and the money that goal cost me, credit where credit is due, he knew where he wanted the ball to end up and he executed it brilliantly.

I've never seen enough goals to say best ever but as a neutral, I think it's one of the best I've seen at that ground.

Because of the height of the ball at point of contact, technique, skill, accuracy.

On the ground goals aren't really as good as these sort of goals in terms of long range strikes for me, simply because, a good majority of players in their careers at all levels really score a bit of a screamer at some point. All great goals still but hitting a ball while it's on the ground is easier than hitting a volley over your head while the ball is around 6ft in the air. Also a reason why these sort of volleys at that height into the top corner are rarely seen. Even the Berbatov one for me doesn't compare because he sets himself with a touch. This was the ultimate bicycle kick, a computer game bicycle kick.

Go down to the park, get ball rolled back to you 30 times about 25 yards out and hit them. Then get another 30 crossed into you for a bicycle kick penalty spot distance and tell me which is the harder to master with accuracy to get into the corners with pace and power.

The only goals I think compare with perfectly struck bicycle kicks are individual runs, Messi, Maradonna, or even goals that are perfectly struck on the volley from high distances because that is so difficult, Zidane and Scholes volleys spring to mind.

I've been lucky enough to be a striker to score pretty much every goal you can score, although haven't ever scored a volley with the ball dropping from a height. Bicycle kick and a run going past 4/5 including goalie bought the best feeling and I think you can almost tell with emotions, when you know it's a great goal because it's the most difficult.

So yeah, I don't think the goal can be under-estimated as true quality, it's a shame really it came for United, as I was gunning for City.

The fact, shots like this are missed probably 99/100, is exactly WHY it's one of the great goals.
