Was Scholes Substitution Legal?

This has presumably been raised on here before but, as Scholes had retired from playing at the end of last season and was presumably no longer registered with the club, how come he was allowed to play? He was only staying on in a coaching capacity surely? They should be fined umpteen thousand pounds and ejected from the tournament in my impartial opinion.

No, the rags didn't make the cup final, but the semi final...... there were 6 PL games after the semi.
