Wayne Harrison RIP

R.I.P. Wayne.

Always felt so sorry for this guy. Had to retire at 22 after god knows how many injuries. He kept coming back and giving it his all. Never made an appearance for Liverpool after moving from Oldham.

Send end to the day for sure.....

He can only have been in his mid 40s, I remember very well his big move to Liverpool as a teenager and the terrible run of injuries that followed.

RIP

Different person ??

I knew Wayne and he was a really nice guy, was only speaking to him a few weeks ago. To have a talent like he did and have it taken away from you must be almost impossible to deal with. Hate to say it but if he had been given better support from people in the game he might still be with us. It's a sad story.

RIP Wayne.

Former Liverpool and Oldham Athletic player Wayne Harrison dies

Former Liverpool footballer Wayne Harrison has died at the age of 46 following pancreatic problems, the club has said.

Harrison was described by the Reds as the world's most expensive teenager when the striker signed from Oldham Athletic for £250,000 in 1985, aged 17.

A series of injuries and accidents led to his early retirement in 1991.

A club spokesman said Harrison, from Stockport, died in hospital on Christmas Day.

Joe Fagan, Liverpool manager at the time of his signing, put in a record bid for Harrison after he scored twice to help Oldham beat the Reds in the FA Youth Cup in December 1984.

Harrison's career at Anfield was marred by injuries, including a near fatal accident in which he fell through a greenhouse and suffered a major loss of blood.

However, he bounced back in the late 80s and was top scorer for Liverpool reserves in the 1989-90 season, scoring 17 goals in 28 games to help the side win the Central League title.

'Deeply saddened'

The club spokesman said he was on the verge of his first-team breakthrough when irreparable damage to his knee forced him to quit football.

The severity of his injury also meant he was unable to play in his testimonial game at Boundary Park in 1992 between Oldham and Liverpool.

After retiring he worked as a HGV driver.

The Liverpool spokesman said the club would pay tribute to Harrison at a home game, the date of which was yet to be confirmed.

He said that the "thoughts of everyone at Liverpool go out to his family and friends at this sad time".

A spokesman for Oldham Athletic said the club was "deeply saddened" to learn of Harrison's death on Wednesday.

"We would like to extend our deepest condolences and sympathies on behalf of players, officials and supporters of Oldham Athletic to Wayne's family and friends at this sad time," he said.

Really sad. RIP.
Bit more about him here from the Mirror.

i was at school with him, he was 2 years below me.
Remember him driving around in a XR3 just after he signed for Liverpool.
RIP Wayne

Wayne was a school friend of mine and i was lucky enough to play up front with him in one game at school. We won 10-0 and Wayne got 9.

I remember one game he played for Oldham at the age of 16. Wayne, another blue (Crowey) and I travelled up via 3 buses from Offerton. He disappeared into the players entrance and me and Crowey watched from the terrace. Even at that age he was phenominal and was lightening quick with superb composure.

Remember him discussing a game he played at schoolboy level for Oldham at Maine Road. Biggest pitch ever he ever palyed on he told me.

The same week he signed for Liverpool he was still playing indoor 5 a side at Stockport Lads Club; that was Wayne, down to earth and addicted to football. He was a complete Liverpool nut and often used to take the mickey out of me and a few other blues. That day he signed for Liverpool was his dream come true.

It was an XR2 Fiesta he had first if I remmeber correctly.

Injuries and misfortune blighted his career, but even later after retirement our paths crossed playing Sunday Football. Wayne played with a brace on his knee but was still a class apart.

Very sad news and a talent lost.

I remember hearing about this guy around the time of his testimonial in the early 1990s. He only came on the pitch for a few minutes due to his injuries. Supposed to have been a real prospect - one of the best.

Did he receive a bad injury from a goalkeeper ?

I played against him a couple of times when we were teens, so have always known who he was and of his very sad football career.
Someone who knows him a lot better only told me last Friday his death was imminent.
I felt for him then, and for his poor family now.
RIP
