Your right.. in journalism, if your grammar is shit and you can't spell it's deemed as a plus point.. well it seems that way after the amount of articles I've read in various papers that have poor spelling! - Even thick twats like me can manage to get words with more than 5 letters right due to an amazing thing called "spell check"

Presumably you're a journalist then?

To the OP, you absolutely have to start writing a lot if you're not doing so already. Writing a personal blog is good, but you should also try to write for a student paper as it shows people that you can write to a word limit and a deadline as well. You need to build up a portfolio of writing. If you apply for anything without this, even just work experience or an internship, they'll throw your application in the bin - there are too many people looking to get in to journalism for them all to get a job so they'll be looking for reasons not to take you.
Sports writing is not my thing, but if you are interested in it then make sure you write about a wide range of subjects - not just City, and preferably not just football. You'll be a lot more interesting to someone looking at your work if you come across as someone who's able to write about more than just his personal hobbies.

As has already been said, write and write and write.
It sounds trivial but if you're going to start blogging, make sure you have an eye-catching title, possibly even one that someone may stumble across via a google search. How many hits do you reckon this guy (<a class="postlink" href="http://thebelgianwaffle.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://thebelgianwaffle.co.uk/</a>) has received from people searching simply "Belgian waffle" etc...

'Puppies.com' it is then..

What exactly is a ''blogger''?
I mean you see it on the news.... they interview someone who is a scientist and it says ''Fred Jones, scientist'' and you think ''wow, he is intelligent etc''

Yet I see the news and they are interviewing ''a blogger'' and i think ''self appointed / self opinionated tosser with no mates.''
So you write a blog. How many people read it?

As stated, write for the student weekly rag, with an editor asking for specific work by a specific deadline..... then keep copies of your articles in the paper and build a portfolio up.

Er, if they are interviewing the blogger on the TV news then I think it's safe to assume he's a bit more than a self opinionated tosser with no mates.

The only big negative thing about blogging as a way of starting out is that it's harder to get an audience for a personal blog than it is when you write for an outlet that already has an audience like a student paper. People who already have a profile built up elsewhere, like the Nobel prize winning economist Paul Krugman, can get hundreds of thousands of hits to their blog.
