Theories are that everything has already happened, we are just in one big Computer simulation which is created by big corporations, we are enslaved machines keeping the more powerful machines going.
It isn't a case of "we are doomed" it's: we have already been doomed.

We just keep going along, if we play the game correctly (like in a videogame) you'll be rewarded with points (money)
Add to this many believe Capitalism and Religion to be software updates installed to keep the machines (us) controlled.

but who created the big corporations like Google?
we're led to believe it was just a few geeks in their basements but wasn't it a software update implemented into their systems which allowed them to understand and build Google?
