5-1 was definitely a night match, I was there. It had been postponed earlier in the season. White bagged 4 and Quinn was utterly unplayable. City were fabulous that night, just utterly brilliant.
my mistake-its just me being lazy and not checking what i,d posted. the 5-1 i was referring to was in over the rags at maine road-the point i was making was it was sandwiched inbtween Machin as manager and Kendall taking over and leading us to safety.
No.
Machin was still in charge at the time of the Maine Road massacre. We beat Luton 3-1 the next week.
IIRC, Machin was sacked late November or early Decmber and Kendall was appointed within a few days.
I know Machin was still in charge at the time of the utd 5-1. the point i was making was that he started then season in charge,we beat the scum 5-1 in sept ,but but by the time we went to vllla park, despite the september massacre,we had kendall in charge.
Machin was sacked within minutes of the ref blowing his whistle at selhurst park after we drew 1-1 with charlton..Freddie Pye had let slip that if we didn,t get all three points that day Machin was out. and so it proved.
i remember the 3-1 over luton town by the way-atmosphere on the kippax that day was electric, the 5-1 still pumping through everyones veins..we could have been playing anyone that day they would still have been beat-Luton didn,t know what had hit them, David Oldfield helped himself to two goals.
I liked Machin, nice guy and tried to play good football, but the change in our team and outlook when kendall took over was immense. from being a talented but brittle team of young men who fell like a pack of cards when any semblance of pressure was applied,we turned into strong, experienced rugged side whose main priority was to give the oppisition no space to play and to clear our lines as fast a s possible, feeding big niall quinn at the earliest opportunity.
Watching machin,s city away at southampton a week before he was sacked was typical. we took a big following down there, started well, went 1-0 up and the party in the away seats had begun, cracking songs about bobby charlton "you are next!" etc..then Southampton raised their game, their fans got right behind them and collapsed..lost 2-1.
Kendall took over and we went to everton away on a sunday, live on tv ,in the days when everton were a good team and rarely lost at home. Kendall had brought in Allan Harper-not the blue moon poster but the ex scouse full back and played him at sweeper..clive allen was dropped to the bench and we grinded our way to a nil-nil draw. allen came on at the end and nearly stole the points for us. from being a flimsy team of kids we were transformed into a side whio knew how to pick up points away from home against quality teams.
The performance at villa park ,later that season was a great example of this, beating a villa side managed by graham taylor who were going for the title and rarely lost at home. the drive and determination of season pros like mark ward, harper, reid, quinn heath and megson introduced steel into manchester city. i had seen nothing like it in my short time watching city -gone were the second half fook ups, the pathetic away displays, the talented opening 15 mins before collapsing like a pack of cards, the lack of leadership.
The villa park result ,after the poll tax riots was a great day for city, Kendall had restored our pride, Listening o the tv coverage later that night the experts were speechless-no one saw that result coming. the turn out away from home by blues watching a struggling team was tremendous-trips to villa park now seem like a trip to the library by comparison. i feel sorry for new fans who have never experienced what its like to go away ,get behind a goal and roar your team on without being told to sit down by some dickhead steward.
