Villa Park, day after the poll tax riots in london, the anti thatcher hatred still hanging heavy in the air and the blueboys hit brum, pissed up ,with a shit away record and villa going for the title mental scenes on the old away terrace as reid fires the winner....

Fast forward twenty odd years and here we go again ,swansea the victims this time round..

Anyone remember the utter chaos and jubilation of that day..?

Howard Kendall,s blue and white army!!

They'll be a (pissed up) riot the day after Thatcher dies thats for sure...

Not sure if it's the same game your talking about but I remember beating Villa on a Sunday at their place then returning back into Manchester to see the Strangeways riots kicking off big time.

That,ll be the one ..1990 IIRC Machin had started the season and Kendall ended it with a nice 5-1 result back in sept 89...Villa never really got going and we had a new hero in Niall Quinn who led the line very well for us that day, gave us a focal point in attack and Harper and Megson someone to aim for with long hasty punts upfield.

Gary Megson..remember him?..how would todays barry haters have took to smeg.

Mark Ward was brilliant that day, helping out in defence as well as making in roads down the left wing, even tho he was right footed..Kendall was onto the old inverted wingers long before Bobby Manc.

Had we signed Coton by then or was it Dibbo,Dibbo,Dibbo!...?

I thought the 5-1 was a night match but my memory is fading and i'm almost certain the other Villa game for the Strangeways riots was a Sunday afternoon 2-1 win?

5-1 was definitely a night match, I was there. It had been postponed earlier in the season. White bagged 4 and Quinn was utterly unplayable. City were fabulous that night, just utterly brilliant.

my mistake-its just me being lazy and not checking what i,d posted. the 5-1 i was referring to was in over the rags at maine road-the point i was making was it was sandwiched inbtween Machin as manager and Kendall taking over and leading us to safety.

the match at villa park 1n 1990 was of course 2-1 city.

the other 5-1 was when we played in all white.in a tues night, took about 6000 and smashed villa under joseph venglos,s confused leadership.one of the best nights i,ve had as a city fan.

anyway, back to villa park 1990,just after the poll tax riots. peter reid scored the winner..anyone else remember this one ?

Absolutely, it was a beautiful summer day and Wardy got a deflected shot to equalise and Whitey then hit the post with Reidy (Ithink) ramming in the rebound... the guy behind me was on crutches and as it all when mad, he ended sliding down the terrace behind the goal on his back waving his crutches in the air!!

nice one !
i can still remember now that feeling when white hit the post and old man reid was there like a modern day frank lampard(sort of) to calmly slot the re-bound away..we thought white,s shot was in..the drama of the rebound then just delirium all round..anyone would think we had just beat real madrid...it was villa away ffs,but we were little old city who hadnm,t won away for about a year and villa with ..erm...david platt...looking as though they were gonna win the league..live on tv and we went out there and played like a team who knew exactly what they were doing. brilliant day,top atmosphere...bring back the terraces!!

I'm pretty sure the 5 -1 was around april 1991, I believe Peter Reid was manager by then, I was on a training course and there were a dozen or so Villa fans there who had given me the usual shit about how they were going to stuff us. Funny none of them came to the bar that night!
So they were given a few renditions of Bluemoon & 1,2, 1,2,3, 1,2,3,4 5,1 (you know the one), outside their room doors!

No.

Machin was still in charge at the time of the Maine Road massacre. We beat Luton 3-1 the next week.

IIRC, Machin was sacked late November or early Decmber and Kendall was appointed within a few days.

This game was played on April 1st 1990. Villa were going for the title, we hadn't had an away win all season. Gordon Cowans and David Platt combined brilliantly to put Villa 1-0 up.

A few minutes later Mark Ward turned and fired a curling left foot shot past Nigel Spink at the Holte End to make it 1-1.

Second half saw City in charge. Then towards the end David White cut in from the left flank (IIRC) and hit the post only for the ball to bounce out and Peter Reid put it in.

First time Bluemoon was sung I think?

Fab afternoon.

I know Machin was still in charge at the time of the utd 5-1. the point i was making was that he started then season in charge,we beat the scum 5-1 in sept ,but but by the time we went to vllla park, despite the september massacre,we had kendall in charge.

Machin was sacked within minutes of the ref blowing his whistle at selhurst park after we drew 1-1 with charlton..Freddie Pye had let slip that if we didn,t get all three points that day Machin was out. and so it proved.

i remember the 3-1 over luton town by the way-atmosphere on the kippax that day was electric, the 5-1 still pumping through everyones veins..we could have been playing anyone that day they would still have been beat-Luton didn,t know what had hit them, David Oldfield helped himself to two goals.

I liked Machin, nice guy and tried to play good football, but the change in our team and outlook when kendall took over was immense. from being a talented but brittle team of young men who fell like a pack of cards when any semblance of pressure was applied,we turned into strong, experienced rugged side whose main priority was to give the oppisition no space to play and to clear our lines as fast a s possible, feeding big niall quinn at the earliest opportunity.

Watching machin,s city away at southampton a week before he was sacked was typical. we took a big following down there, started well, went 1-0 up and the party in the away seats had begun, cracking songs about bobby charlton "you are next!" etc..then Southampton raised their game, their fans got right behind them and collapsed..lost 2-1.

Kendall took over and we went to everton away on a sunday, live on tv ,in the days when everton were a good team and rarely lost at home. Kendall had brought in Allan Harper-not the blue moon poster but the ex scouse full back and played him at sweeper..clive allen was dropped to the bench and we grinded our way to a nil-nil draw. allen came on at the end and nearly stole the points for us. from being a flimsy team of kids we were transformed into a side whio knew how to pick up points away from home against quality teams.

The performance at villa park ,later that season was a great example of this, beating a villa side managed by graham taylor who were going for the title and rarely lost at home. the drive and determination of season pros like mark ward, harper, reid, quinn heath and megson introduced steel into manchester city. i had seen nothing like it in my short time watching city -gone were the second half fook ups, the pathetic away displays, the talented opening 15 mins before collapsing like a pack of cards, the lack of leadership.

The villa park result ,after the poll tax riots was a great day for city, Kendall had restored our pride, Listening o the tv coverage later that night the experts were speechless-no one saw that result coming. the turn out away from home by blues watching a struggling team was tremendous-trips to villa park now seem like a trip to the library by comparison. i feel sorry for new fans who have never experienced what its like to go away ,get behind a goal and roar your team on without being told to sit down by some dickhead steward.
