Probably one for Damocles (hello mate).

Are there any plans to enable hosting of webm or vines on the forum? I appreciate that constantly tweaking the forum to keep up with every video/file format must be time consuming or expensive, and that BM isn't an imageboard like 4chan (thank God), but webms in particular are longer and in better quality than gifs and might be useful to users.

I suppose one risk were webms to be supported would be an influx of homemade goals and highlights , which seems to be pissing the authorities off no end at the moment.

We can already display webm on the site using the tag.

We're not quite there yet with Vines but it is something that I've been beavering away on for a little while. It's often hard because many users use browsers that cannot support these type of things and it means creating a two tier user system. With that said, I'm trying to find good workarounds the problem and think of how we can best handle those fail situations.

To use webm or other HTML5 based video with our video tag, you have to include the actual file extension so it recognises what type of video you have provided.

So for

<a class="postlink" href="http://gfycat.com/CandidImmaterialDromedary" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://gfycat.com/CandidImmaterialDromedary</a>

you would need to right click the video and "Copy Video URL" or equivalent to get the proper link:

<a class="postlink" href="http://giant.gfycat.com/CandidImmaterialDromedary.webm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://giant.gfycat.com/CandidImmaterialDromedary.webm</a>

Which you can then use in the video tag

HTML5 video is pretty new so this is the way for us to do it and support the most sites at the moment rather than filtering every single site that hosts that type of video and putting development time into the tag constantly as new companies rise and fall.

There is a way to do it with Vine but it's complicated and not really worth the effort. We'll sort it out soon.
