20 years on from the Division Two Play Off Final we return to Wembley Stadium to challenge for another major trophy, and who knows, if we get the results we need then perhaps an historic domestic treble as well.
The Play Off Final represents an era when we were at our lowest but also an era when our support was arguably at its strongest and the Dickov equaliser and celebration remains one of the most memorable and iconic moments in the history of the club. For many this game respresents the resurrection of Manchester City.
Winning that game didn’t just lead to back to back promotions, it meant we agreed to become tenants to the future commonwealth games stadium. Just over a decade later and the land and potential for growth around that stadium meant we caught the eye of a certain Sheikh Mansour. The rest as they say is history.
If you’ve got an original Wembley 99 shirt, the retro replica, this season’s tribute away shirt or even one of the gingerwigs bobble hats then wear it to the cup final.
Of course, not everyone has City wear in those Wembley 99 colours so if you don’t then wear a red & black scarf, shirt or hat in memory of the 50th anniversary of the Mercer/Alison team collecting the FA Cup in 1969 following a winning goal from Neil Young against Leicester City.
Two memorial and unforgettable days in our history.
