Anyone who hasn't booked train tickets whi is travelling with a mate look into 2together rail pass. It costs £30 for a year and you get one third off ticket cost. So for one journey Manchester to London at about £180 for 2 people it pays for itself and saves about £25. Then you can use for next year anywhere in the country.
You need passport picture of both people and only takes 5 minutes from any ticket office. Only slight downside is you have to travel with that person to get the discount.
Return tickets are cheaper still if you use a split ticketing site (there are a few available, just Google "split rail tickets UK")
You can also use railcards to get the usual extra discounts on top of the ordinary split ticket price
Rail companies know there will be extra demand on 1/3/2020 for simple Mcr-Euston tickets. Split ticketing is a perfectly legal and legitimate way to get around these ripoff fares.
