Where did this song originate? I always thought that we sung it in the new stadium because we couldn't believe that we were in this impeccable ground, but I was watching the 4-1 mauling of Blackburn in 2000, and I noticed the song being sung in full voice... so, where did it all start?

there's your answer. (others will disagree) definitely a lot older than eastlands that's for sure.

Bloody hell Bob,no offence mate but try doing a forum search, this topic is one of those that pops up about every three months!

It's all to do with some bloke from some supporters club who did or didn't do something,he may have died. Hope that clears it up for you! :)

Not this fucking thread again. There are disputed origins, about four different ones ranging from Millwall (when the City fans were banned) and a bar being wrecked by City fans (who then sang it to the police) but the one I'm convinced by is that it was sung at a wake of a City fan who was a member of the Prestwich branch. The full lyrics being:

If you drink you will die,
If you don't drink you will die,
So it's better to be drunk than be sober when you die,
Just like the fans of the Invisible Man, we're not really here.

I thought it was from the Swales era when a packed Maine Roads gate was announced as '25,000' or so, hence the 'We're not really here' song.

Although this is the version I sing, I have been told that the original version is "if you drink you will die, if you're sober you will die" instead of "if you don't drink you will die"
