I was in the same team as Alan West, ex Burnley and Luton Town (captain) a brilliant player even when he was twelve.

One of my lads was in the same team as Bournemouth's Marc Pugh, again a very talented schoolboy player at the time.

I never knew football existed until I went to junior school aged 7.

In the playground on my first day, I saw all these kids chasing balls around, but didn't have a clue what was going on.

After a while, one of my classmates asked me if I wanted to join in, and when I said 'yes', he asked if I had played football. I said I hadn't, so he said I could go in goal.

I remember watching a ball trickle past me into the goal, then being surrounded by my team mates asking me why I hadn't stopped it?

I had no idea.

Given the fact I never kicked a football until I was 7 years old, I was never that good at the game, and I had no delusions about it either.

I was playing cricket years before, and I was much better at that than football. Cricket was my sport as a youngster, and that carried on well into my adult life, as well as hockey.

I was crap at football.

I wasn't bad and played for Stockport County from 8 until I was 15. That was in the years that we were playing them in the First Division, which was great for free tickets in the Cheadle End.

Was a full back/winger but got released for being too small. Pretty much fooked playing football off after that to watch city instead.
