What is the M word?

I voted NF twice in local elections, in 1981 and 82.
I grew up in a totally white environment (no more than ten non white boys in a 1,500 boys school) and then worked at a Ford Main Dealer garage from '79 - '83.
I was stupidly influenced by an idiot who told me that black people's aim was to out breed 'whitey' and take over the country. In the absence of an intelligent view opposing his comments, I voted NF, along with 47 other people in the ward.

I left the said garage and thankfully travelled the world a bit, meeting for the first time non white people on a regular basis and appreciating them for their own individual merits.

I also recall cringing at hearing racists on the Kippax justifying their booing of black opposition players - yet supporting Alex Williams, on the basis that ''he's one of us''. Triple shake of the head....

Fair play MES. It takes a big man to admit that. And as you say, that type of attitude is usually based on ignorance and fear, rather than anything more calculated, at least among those that follow, rather than lead within racist circles.

I don't think I will ever come to understand why some feel the need to judge others because of the colour of their skin. It's a concept that I just can't grasp. Does that make me an idealist, or just naïve?

The racists that were around in the 1970s and 1980s are still here today.
They have aged, I know plenty. There not bad people, theres nothing wrong with having an opinion.

The area I live has a sizeable pakistani population and I find then an ignorant lot. you speak to them and they ignore you, the women just look away.

There ways are different then mine. I dont like them. I am a racist, so what !!!

Almost everyone is a casual racist in a harmless and acceptable way. This includes people from all races.

Then there are the book ends at each end of the shelf. One end is a group of shithouses who are the sort who get offended at everything; the other end are the spiteful wankers who hold true prejudices towards other races.

I like this. Very true, and sums it up perfectly for me. The "bookends" are extremists living in fear, and sadly the "shithouses" and the "wankers" both need each other to exist - we'd be better off without both.
