What do we need?

I think the best way of looking at it is in terms of who can the team not function without. We lost Tevez, a player many would think undroppable, but set goal scoring records and eventually scored the most in the league. When Silva was having an off day Nasri stepped up and had a storming end to the season. Without Clichy we still have more than adequate cover at LB, same with Micah. If Lescott drops out you can play any of our other CB's next to Kompany without too much issue, etc.

Without Kompany our back line has no leader. It's fucking awful. We look half the defensive unit with 1/4th of it missing. We need a CB who with Kompany form the ultimate CB pairing, but who can be mixed and matched with greater effect when Kompany isn't there. If he had suffered a long term injury like Vidic we would have been fucked.

Without Yaya it's just not the same team period. You can isolate the defence a little because we spend most games now with the ball attacking, but mess with the midfield and the effect is far more pronounced. We miss Yaya for a myriad of reasons, some speculative (like confidence of the team when he's playing, etc), but some a little more obvious, like pushing him forward to charge at weary defences and produce the big goals in the big moments.

Thiago Silva is the obvious albeit pretty fantasy option for CB. Someone to fill Yaya's stupendously large shoes is a little tougher to find.

Positions I would say are, cb, lw/rw, st and maybe another cm.

Definately need another top class centre back to make it 3 to choose from, thiago silva or chiellini would be awesome.

Winger for obvious reason, we need pace, bale would be perfect.

Striker if dzeko leaves, RVP!!

And I only say cm if what you read about Nige is true, Martinez would fit the mould.

or maybe its just my idea of good players from what ive seen, the 3 players are no brainers and the 2 young players look promisingfrom last season both looking to be getting a big move this summer so what exactly is football manager about that?
Sahin a no brainer? 10 appearances last season after only moving to Real last season.

5 players in, (2 relatively unknowns) with Mario on the list of outs....

ill make this a simple as possible, THIS IS MY VIEW

Sahin; was injured for a big part of last season, the fact that jose signed him in the first place should tell u he is a good player and would be ideal to fase in as Barry's replacement and is technically fantastic.

Sturidge; was the replacement for mario because lets face it mario does more bad than good(in my opinion) and sturidge is progressing alot quicker than him aswell as him being homegrown and more than likely less wages work in his credit. And im a Dzeko fan so i want to keep him.

Silva; i dont really need to exsplain.

Wolski; is looking to be going to Dortmund this summer for around £4mill and looks to be a great prospect for a right sided midfielder with the chance to become great learning from silva and nasri with not much risk at the price.

Verratti; dont really know much about him just a bit on youtube but has a big rep already and could possibly be a yaya replacement in a couple of years time, just depends on the price.

He is more of a deep lying playmaker than a driving CM though. A very good signing though as is more of a Pirlo type of player.

We're all on about wingers and plan B when the bus is parked.

Perhaps I haven't seen enough of him, but isn't Vladi Weiss worth a bit more of a look. He is still very young, seems to have bags of pace, talent and confidence, and scores some excellent goals.

What's missing here?

I have watched him play a bit in la liga and thought he was excellent.. by far that teams best player... Espanyol isnt it?

Wingers. And I believe we need a Regista.

I don't concur with the statement that we need ANOTHER world class CB. Nobody in this world rotates their CB pairings every alternate week, it upsets the rhythm.

Martinez is a twofer for your problem. Might not be as good as either in their positions, but is on a par with most in the world in those positions.

-- Fri Jun 08, 2012 12:09 am --

Was reading one of the coaches saying he was not quite there yet; not the finished article. Maybe he needs a good pre-season, where he plays FOR THE TEAM, rather than heads down, take 'em on, see if anything comes of it.....like a young SWP.

Expectations are high on EVERY player to be able to do more than just one thing. So far, I have only seen him do that one thing, even if it brings a goal every now and then, like it did last pre-season.

Question at City now is always going to be: Is he better than the player in front of him? And if there are two ahead of him, can you afford him in your 25 man squad, which only covers 3 keepers and two of everything else, plus a couple of utility midfielders!

This. CB and cover for Yaya. Failing a real cover for Yaya - and that's a very big ask, someone who does something else we don't already have in the team - for me, width, pace, good crossing.
That's presuming no one important leaves.
