What has the UK become?
On the face of it the question is just another version of the perennial "ain't we shit" so beloved by political affiliates (of all sides) not getting their own way. However, I think what has happened is not politically based at all but social and can be summed up by two phrases and one huge social change.
1: The harder I work the luckier I become.
2: From the cradle to the grave (usually associated with the NHS but can be applied in multiple instances)
3: Social change is the huge influence of women in all aspects of life since they were given the vote in 1928(?). Which is obviously correct if you believe in democracy.
My whole argument is that the greater influence of women has meant we have moved from an ultra competitive, testosterone, macho, winner takes all attitude to a much more gentler, caring, work/life balanced, quality over quantity attitude.
So, "The harder I work the luckier I become" phrase is pointing out you will not become or remain a champion world beating country by having a work/life balance because someone else somewhere will just have a work/work balance and overtake us.
The second phrase "From the cradle to the grave" is beloved by very many (utterly detested by others). It sounds great but usually means the middle and upper classes making 'pets' out of the working class. For me, going back to Darwin and 'survival of the fittest' and 'natural selection' it takes out that necessary competitiveness to achieve economic success.
Bottom line: No one get's it all. We can be an economic powerhouse (which means working longer and harder) or we can become a more caring, feminine dominated society but have to accept we will be less competitive and presumably poorer.
