What has the UK become?

If only blair and brown didnt have ‘that’ agreement.
Brown wasnt a leader in a million years and the fact that the following election required a con-lib joint coalition makes me think if labour had a decent leader they would have won with ease.

I do worry that we are that far down the hole now that its going to be a struggle for anyone to even begin to fix it
It’s fixable but it will take time

I liked Gordon Brown. He was an outstanding chancellor.

Sadly he undermined himself as PM by failing to call an early election and IMO in that situation and up against an excellent communicator in Cameron, Labour did well for the 2010 election to end in a hung parliament. Especially given the opposition unfairly weaponised the financial crisis.
Brown made a major fuck up by calling that woman a bigot. When she wasnt. Not saying he wasnt a great politician, but he wasnt a leader.
Yeah i agree labour did well to get so close

Well tbh she was clearly a bit, what we’d call these days “gammony”

Someone with an opinion about immigration? She wasn't a bigot mate she was nowhere near a bigot.

It was that moment the working class realised that Labour couldn't give a fuck about them.

It was definitely a sliding doors moment, I agree.

I don’t agree that Labour don’t care about the working class though. The working class are demonstrably better off under a Labour government than a Conservative one.

Johnson’s only success was conning them into believing the Tories did care.

I don't mind Starmer mate, hopefully he can be the kickstart Labour need.

Blair (and I’m a big fan of Tony Blair, I’d vote for him 10x over) had a much easier job in 97 than Starmer is going to have should he win the next election.

To be fair to John Major the economy was getting back on its feet and there wasn’t the same level of societal breakdown that we’ve got today.

Blair inherited a country on a wave of 90s optimism.

Starmer is going to inherit a dumpster fire.

I like Starmer and he’s the first Labour leader since Blair that I feel represents me, and I have confidence he’ll be able to turn it around.

But the electorate are fickle and I do worry that when everything isn’t sunshine and rainbows after the first week of a Labour government the knives will be out.
I fear this too. The only way out of the hole is dynamic sconomic growth and we do not have the building blocks for this nor any real prospect of them. Any new government can only really apply sticking plasters. Throw in a housing crash and a dumb electorate and we could have an even harder right wing government in 5 years.
