What's the difference between Cancelo's foul and TAA's 'challenge'?

Yes, but as the VAR “expert” says in the passage I reproduced earlier in thread, the VAR is judging decisions based on the subjectivity he sees the on-field referee is applying. Not necessarily how he would see it if he was the referee. Obviously as the word “subjective” implies, this can never be an exact science. But that is how they are apparently instructed to adjudicate. Obviously you are occasionally going to get a referee saying..No, I just don’t see, I still think my original decision was right. And fair enough. But I don’t see how an increase in that happening is in any way an obvious improvement.
Unless they are telepathic, there will be instances where they differ on what the deem is a foul. If they were 100% in tune with each other, the referee wouldn’t need to check the monitor as he will always agree with the VAR official, so viewing the monitor would be a waste of time.

Had Taylor stayed with his decision on Haaland’s goal at Anfield, having viewed the monitor, do you think that weakens the system?

There will always be challenges that create a difference of opinion in referees. We’re back to the subjectivity element and that’s why VAR or no VAR, there will always be debatable decisions made.

I 'thought' they should be because they should be. Both were fouls.
The counter argument to that is that football is a contact sport and not every nudge will be given as a foul.

Emmanuel Dennis had his ankle tapped against Brentford, did a comedy dive and didn’t get a penalty.

KDB had his ankle tapped against Fulham, did a comedy collapse with pirouette and got a penalty.

In the current climate under the current rules they are fouls. Consistency is the problem not the Laws of the Game.

Little inconsistencies are inevitable. There are currently chasms of inconsistency.
Sure, but if you showed the clips of Cancelo and TAA’s challenges, 10 out of 10 give the Cancelo one and about 6 out of 10 give the TAA one. (Obviously my opinion, not fact based)

Show the KDB and Dennis ones and both would be 2/10 ish. (Again my opinion)

The bar for clear and obvious is too high in my opinion and the TAA one should have been reviewed. (Again in my opinion)
