What's this 4-2-2-2 Business then?

He obviously sees the 4-5-1 as a defensive formation, which he rarely used against much stronger sides.

Just remember the way Manuel will play the team, is a way which will have to be decided by the club, as in Txiki primarily. A system to be implemented at all levels, from senior side down to toddler, and even our dear sibling in Ne York.

So will it be Txiki's 4-3-3 or will Pellegreni be the architect of the Manchester City way of playing football.
Why are we letting a football director with no managerial experience tell a experienced manager what what formation and tactics he has to use ?

It only looks narrow, the formation allows for width to be created by players peeling wide, something we saw a lot this year so it's quite similar. It requires very adaptable and mobile players, Silva/Isco are perfect in this system and it plays to their strengths. It's very fluid attacking wise so we can expect a lot of movement and a lot of variation in attacks but it's not much different to how we currently play. Defensively nothing will really change from last year but i'm not too sure yet whether Pellegrini likes his full backs to get forward.

As long as we get this bloke to come too we'll be fine, he's definitely the next Pre-Barcelona Fabregas.

And for the sake of discussion: Which players in our current sqaud would you use in a 4-2-2-2?

---------------- JH (CP?) ----------------
------- VK (MR?) ---------- MN (JL)-------
PZ (MR) -------------------------- GC (??)
-------- YT(GB) --------- JR (JG??) ---------
--- JM (??) ------------------ DS (SN) ---
---------- SA (??) -------- CT (ED/??) ----------

Using only our current squad should point out our weaknesses, and areas we need to improve during the t-window.

I think another midfielder with a real 'engine' is a must, to help Clichy out on that side, failing that, perhaps Rodwell could do that job and slot Barry into the middle, but that will restrict Yaya going forward.

I've put my picks for 'backups' in brackets, but if we're going for two for each position, we need another striker, and a left sided fullback as a priority. Obviously I've ignore any of the rumoured signings that are nearly done, and any promoted youth (such as Guidetti)

-------------------- Hart ----------------

Ta Daaaaaaaa

----------------------------------------- Hart ----------------------------------
-------------------Kompany (Richards) ---------- Nastasic (Lescott) -------------
Zabaleta (Richards/Maicon)-------------------------------------- Clichy (Kolorov)
------------------- Yaya (Rodwell) --------- Milner (Barry) -----------------------
--- Silva (Suarez) --------------------------------------- Isco (Nasri)------------
---------------- Aguero (Guddetti) -------- Cavani (Tevez) -----------------------

Looking at those formations, it's clear to see our weakness lays primarily in the central midfield. And what worries me a bit, is that the Yaya I have seen this season doesn't have the engine a CM would need in this system. He really needs to get his act back together, or he should not take a starting position for granted. Rodwell is breathing down his neck.

Another problem we then face, is the competition for places. With only two CM's, we will see a lot of unhappy players at the club; Barry, Milner, Rodwell, Garcia, Yaya, Nasri. My guess is at least one of them will leave this summer though.

Now do the formation with the supposed targets Isco, Cavani and Fernadinho. It will look like an extremely good side, but many players will have to be sold to keep up a good squad harmony.

From Zabba, who played for him at San Lorenzo:

'When you start off with a new experience like this, he will expect to do well straight away and if we work well he can be a success.

'Pellegrini likes to play with two wingers - get the ball out wide. I think we will be more attacking.'

I do not think that sounds very similar to Mancini.

It's hardly dissimilar to what we played under Mancini. Lacking width, easy to defend against now that teams have us sussed, relying on Clichy and Zab to provide crosses, which neither of them can do. Don't know why people are treating it like an unknown, revolutionary formation.

... The concept of this for formation confuses me, I have never seen a team play this way before but I did listen to Pellegrini talk about it.

It looks like a narrow formation but I know Malaga play with at least one winger, so how does this get incorporated?

Also the two central midfielders - what's their remit? Are they box-to-box, deep laying play makers or defensive midfielders - or a combination?

With regards to the full backs, do they get exposed? Our full backs often got protection in the 4231 formation from the wing.

I guess what would be good is if there is someone out there who has watched Pellergrini's teams before and knows how they line up and what the strengths and weaknesses are!

You've watched manchester city player 4-2-2-2 / 4-2-3-1 for the last 2 seasons?

wow some people on here do amaze me.
