A lot of the best films over time have been based off of books/writing. Most of films that have come out over the last 20 years have been fucking awful and are either plugged films for a quick sell or are shit sequels to franchises.

The amount of films that have been based on Stephen King novels/short stories are quite incredible. I just am not sure where decent films are going to come from anymore. AI is certainly not going to solve this issue.

Forgot to say that original soundtracks are so important too.
 
I would tend to agree but Alex Garland may be an exception. He makes very decent films that are genuinely thought-provoking.

Sicario and Arrival are excellent films. I've never understood the hype surrounding the original Blade Runner film, so I'll pass on the 2049 variant, though (like the original), it is stunning to look at.
 
It's definitely reached a point where I find it hard to use my imagination. Instead I spend the duration looking for mistakes or plot holes, judging how bad acting is or how flimsy props look.
I grew up amazed by special effects. CGI was supposed to make us achieve these dream ideas, not used as a tool to save money. I was genuinely impressed when the guys who were making star wars developed a new studio with a giant screen around them, they could make it look like the actors were anywhere on earth. Now I can't stop looking out for suspiciously flat floors as I'm bored to death. Sorry if rant made no sense I've been on the vino

I am in exactly the same boat. Watched Jurassic World Rebirth a few weeks ago and the animation is shocking. I do not understand how 30 years have gone by and the dinosaurs look worse than they did in Jurassic Park! The acting is literally like hiring the cheapest person from Indeed too.
 
Guess the cinema model has been severely wounded by TV companies.

Whilst the bigger money can be made in TV series, films will lag behind, barring the odd successful new franchise, or one off cult classics made on smaller budgets.

Yeah one of the last trilogy was on the tv the other day and it was noticeable how it was an animation. Really poor.

The acting in the newest one was so bad.

It is a very good film. Murphy is excellent as Oppenheimer. My only issue is that it is a bit too long. The second half of the film, after the Trinity test, when he's facing the inquiry into his political affiliations, tends to drag on a bit.
 
Wes Anderson has easily been the most consistently good over the last 20 years. That said, his style is so idiosyncratic, they’re almost variations on the same stylistic theme. Ditto the Coens, although No Country for Old Men, was a bit of a departure.
