When Sterling went off for Nasri yesterday the dreaded left side problem just started to raise its head, Nevil picked up on it in the commentary. Nasri and Silva tend to drift around and don’t tend to pin back full backs like Sterling or Navas who will pick up good defensive positions, track back quickly and always threaten to get in behind full backs if they push forward. When Sterling went off Coleman could get forward more and there was space down our left. It was quite clear to see and just before we scored Delph was getting ready to come on and ended up coming on after the goal for Silva. This allowed Nasri to shift to the middle and into Silva’s role and Delph just sat back deep on the left hand side. That’s his role for us, a holding player who can sure up the left defensively and give us balance. If we play 4231 he could replace either of the two and sit further to the left or in a 433 he is a natural for the left of the midfield 3.
