Who are you? What happened to you?

Manchester City are relegated to the third tier of English football for the first and only time in their history. City go down fighting with a 5-2 victory, but in the end, it's too little too late. The Stoke players are booed off by their own supporters, and the manager is verbally abused as he makes his way to the tunnel in the corner of the stadium.

Some of the Stoke fans aren't booing though, they're stood starring in disbelief at the 5,000 Manchester City fans behind the goal. A rendition of 'We'll support you ever more' is accompanied by tears and thoughts of what the futures may hold, may it be in one years time, or ten years time. The City players and the manager, Joe Royle, are given a standing ovation as they make their way to the dressing room, a complete contrast to the reaction the Stoke fans gave their own side, who faced relegation as well.

February 24th 2010 - The Britannia Stadium

Manchester City are heading towards the end of their best season since the 1970's. Within touching distance of qualification to the European Cup for the first time since 1968 and after already reaching their first semi final since 1981. The club is now possibly the richest in world sport, plays in one of the best stadiums in Europe and has players which City fans could only have dreamed of a decade ago.

After a defeat in the FA Cup 5th round to Stoke City and after a run of other disappointing performances, the team is booed off by sections of the 3,000 travelling fans. The manager, Roberto Mancini, is verbally abused as he makes his way to the tunnel. As he looks up he sees numerous hand gestures being made in his direction, this after only being in the job for two short months.

Was this really the same set of fans from just over a decade previously? What had happened to them? Were they drunk on money and power? Is it too late to stop the change?

Cracking post......................................

Re: What happened? What happened to you?

The last thing I did last night as I left 3 minutes before the end of extra time was join in a chorus of Bluemoon even though I was pissed off with what I had witnessed.

I can't speak for the 30 or so morons who have stole all the headlines and played right into the hands of the City hating press by their action towards Mancini but they represent 1 in 100 of us so the other 99/100 are still the same as they were in 1998 by my reckoning.

Re: What happened? What happened to you?

Excellent post except for one point
WHAT BOOING?
Yes Mancini isn't the right man for the job and we already had someone despite his faults would have got us to one final and secured top 4 by now.
We should have booed but that doesn't help anyone does it. I did my booing in my head hehe!

Stoke were the better side once Ade was sent off and Mancini did what everyone expected, take off Bridge. Mmm excellent move bobby!

He's obsessed with the Italian style and has no idea what English football is about. Well done Stoke you may have made our owners minds up who's gonna be in charge next season.

We went to the game last night and left with around ten minutes to go...we were disappointed but would never dream of hurling abuse like that which i have read about on this forum tonight. I always thought we were good humoured especially when results were not going our way...its always the minority who give the majority a bad name!

Re: What happened? What happened to you?

OP - Top post . Sums things up perfectly.

I'd just like to make it clear to anyone who wasn't able to make it last night that the vast majority of City fans did not boo or hurl abuse. I think that some others have said as much but some other posts I've read could give the impression the boos and abuse were more noticeable than they were. Where I stood, which was pretty near the front and close to the players tunnel, everyone I could see applauded our team off. I did not hear any boos at all, just a few protests but nothing major.

Come on blues it's about supporting your team in the face of adversity and not this "I didn't come here and pay to see them lose" rag mentality.

Dead on. It's one thing having differing opinions, but sometimes you wonder at vitiol posted about the team we love and support.

excellent opening post

personally, i think too many City fans are having their opinions twisted by the media in this country, where we're target number one. We need a siege mentality
