Ferna for me is still our best pivot - he cannt do it every 3 days but in a one off game he has to be there...so much better at the defensive side of the game and can still make the passes required (Maybe not as effective as Rodri at this but the plusses outweight the negative.

KDB has to be in there - little else to say

then the question over Bernardo and Foden. For me the answer is Bernardo simply becuase we can for now play Foden wider and he is more effective there than Bernardo at present

However this only is rellevant if you are playing the 3 which we rarely do for a fullg ame as it interchanges so much

For me our strongest 11 with everyone fully fit and at the top of their game is:

---------------Ederson

Walker ----Dias------Laporte----- Ake

-----------------Ferna--------------

--------KDB--------------Fode/Bernardo

Sterling -----------Kun---------------Jesus

That midfield 3 plus sterling and Jesus has a lot of legs in it and can press and cover/recover

Ake at left back is easily the best option we have right now (not ideal for him but he is far supreior to Mendy, Zinchenko - you could put Cancello there and it would be more attacking.

It has goals and creativity in it while not being bad defensively either (again due ot he legs in midfield.

I couldn't care less what he did in 2019, Its 2020 now. Gundogan is hardly getting better with age is he, he is off the back of COVID and niggling injuries and he is contributing nothing to the team.
Gundogan hasn't performed now for over 18mths.

Not really sure what to say to this when it's complete bollocks start to finsh.

He's performing as well as he ever has. The double pivot of Rodri-Gundogan isn't great, but you must surely know that's not the same as Gundogan playing badly? Just on the weekend he had a very good individual game and created 3 golden chances for us to score. He's shown he's in brilliant form with his Germany selections as well.

At least you let us all know you're writing fiction when you complained about niggling injuries. He's not had any injuries since that brilliant run in 2019.

As much as I agree that he's a good player, could that also be that the team was SO well balanced, SO set in their ways and so mechanically brilliant that we could elevate a good player to 'very good' in a team like that because it was surrounded by functioning brilliance that other teams were scared of and sat back loads? I mean we got by with Zinchenko at left-back cos we were so good! This system is nowhere that now. Gundogan, in that season, was surrounded by an in form Silva, still able to press, Vincent Kompany, possibly our greatest ever leader, a Ballon D'or nominee in Bernardo, Sterling in great form, Sergio and GJ fit and firing etc etc. The team now has no balance compared to then, and maybe that shows up his weaknesses a bit so there's no places for (admittedly good) passengers? Just a thought.

What does that even mean?

"We can't have Gundogan in midfield, because when we did have him in midfield the side was so well balanced." Yeah, maybe because the midfield was well balanced?

If you are working on the assumption we can't have a balanced side because we don't have Kompany, Sterling is out of form, the strikers are injured, we don't have a LB etc. then it doesn't matter who you put in midfield, they're going to fail and the side is going to be unbalanced.

IMO the best midfield is Gundogan at 6, KDB and either Bernardo or Foden replacing David Silva. Fernandinho is clearly not going to be a starter this season based on how he's been used so far, Rodri isn't half as bad as people make out, but Gundogan is better.

I think we are watching different games then. In 2019 he had some very good games, I haven't seen him anywhere near that since.

I think the Rodri and Gundogan pivot is awful. It isn't helping either of them, I agree. However, you can't come out and say he was great in 2018-2019 so deserves to be in the team now, 18mths later.

Has he not said himself he is not fully fit and has had little issues? perhaps I am mixing him up with someone else, we have had so many injuries they are just all blurring into one.

......GUNDO...sitting deep and then a two interchanging in KDB and Foden.

I am not Gundo's biggest fan but he looks a lot leaner this year and have more trust in him than Rodri at present.

Foden's legs would help him and Kev.

I'd argue Bernardo also playing wide right in the Mahrez role would also make up an extra man and pair of legs.

Ederson

Walker Laporte Dias Ake

Rodri KDB Bernardo

Foden Aguero Sterling.

That's our best starting XI. I'd like to see Torres given a run tho probably at the expense of Bernardo
