Who misses the football special?

Am I the only one that doesn’t miss it? I’m an FOC so my memory is shit but what I recall is trains that were very slow, no booze, used to have the dibble waiting for you at the other end to escort you straight to the ground, windows often put in, bogs to die in. Camaraderie was good but everything else was shit, much preferred the service trains myself

We often preferred the best of both worlds. Nice leisurely booze fuelled outward journey on your own terms and then dived on the special for a more direct, hassle free trip home. Never checked tickets on the way back.

I was at Huddersfield train station a couple of years ago when a train arrived carrying a load of Chelsea fans. It was a really old train with a catering car on. A bloke in chef whites was talking to the station staff. They must still have the odd train for football fans

I'm sure Chelsea used to sell cheap away travel which was by train before COVID. Not sure if they still do that

Mard arse :)

Yes, I remember the dogs, I think they'd been starving them! Luton's relegation was confirmed that day, from memory I think they needed to win and Spurs lose or draw? Their fans charged on at the final whistle towards the open terrace where the City fans were and then stopped when they realised the City fans were going nowhere. Found the goals footage, not one of Big Joe's best efforts.

No VAR back then!

If they hadn't been chucked out already!

When I got a student railcard with half-price tickets I started using the service trains more and kept the specials mainly for midweek aways where it was difficult to get back on the night.
